I've been working quite long hours in the last week, finishing about at 12 almost every night - having started at 8 in the morning. Last night was no different, except for the fact that we had the storm of the year. As I cycled home in the terrible weather, fully protected with rainproof clothing and armed with good bike lights, the police stopped me. Here is why.
The wind was gusting at approx 28-32m/sec, which is about 60-65mph. It was hard for me to cycle in a straight line, seeing that the wind was from the side. Clearly dangerous to continue this way down a busy street, I decided to slowly continue my ride on the wide and totally empty sidewalk.
Under normal circumstances I would never think of cycling on a sidewalk, I explained to the 2 policeman in their warm car, but this was far from normal circumstances. I explained how I was in danger of being blown in front of a vehicle, but nothing seemed to impress these two over-weight jerks. They told me to get off my bike and walk, if I deemed there was a risk of unsafe cycling conditions, or risk a on the spot fine of 500 Dkr ($90)
Jeesz, sometimes you just cant seem to get through to some people
