I took off down Chuckanut Drive from Bellingham in Saturday's glorious afternoon sunshine and enjoyed the brilliant glow of the bigleaf maples along the road. Fall color is in full swing up here, complete with the slightly musty smell of leaves just starting to decay on the shoulders. My ride continued east on Colony Road to Alger, then back home by way of Lake Samish and Lake Whatcom. It's about a 36-mile loop with a bunch of ups and downs. The weather has been about perfect with the sun and temperatures in the low 50s.
Today I rode out North Shore, up Y Road, and back via Mt. Baker Highway. Colors were nice along that route, too. I rode late in the day, and stopped halfway to visit a friend who lives on the lake, so it was getting chilly by the time I got home just a few minutes before official sunset. Loop is about 21 miles, again with some climbing.
Wednesday I did the mostly flat loop around Lummi Peninsula (counter-clockwise Northwest, Slater, Haxton, Lummi Shore, Marine Drive) and set a personal speed record of 18.9 mph averaged over the 36 or so miles. It's not as nice for colorful foliage as the others, but Mt. Baker was spectacular over Bellingham and the bay. So nice I had to go back to photograph it (see my blog (http://turnerphotographics.com/blog/2008/10/22/mt-baker-from-bellingham-bay/).
October is shaping up to be a great month of riding in my corner of the northwest. I may even break 2000 miles for the year before the month is up as I only have about 50 miles to go.
