Recreational & Family - how to carry a fishing pole?

Does anyone have any plans on a fishing pole carrier? I want to bike to my fishing hole.

If the pole can be broken down into sections, how about an arrow quiver? Next question is how ya gonna carry the fish back?

I use a telescoping rod like in this link. Bought mine at Walmart with reel marked down to $10.
Fits in my panniers for camping.

Cap a section of PVC pipe on one end and attach it to the fork. There's quite a few fishing beaters roaming the Lowcountry here. The fish are brought back in a styrofoam cooler in a milk crate attached to a trunk rack. You secure the tackle box one top of the cooler.

I may end up making my own rack, with a built-in pole carrier and a cooler. I have quite a bit of time before I can ride my bike anyways - we still have 3 feet of snow on the ground. www.upmich.com/vagabond/weather.htm (http://www.upmich.com/vagabond/weather.htm).
I was just wondering if anyone else has made some kind of carrier for fishing poles, and had any tips for me.

In the UK, the usual method of carrying (and most fishermen seem to cycle), is to wrap the pole in a canvas bag and tie it to the top tube. That is one very good reason to favour a traditional horizontal top tube over the latest compact style frames.
I have carried garden hoes, curtain rails, planks of wood. Be careful not to foul the steering. Secure the rear end to the luggage rack. If it sticks out far, attatch a red rag.

I second the telescopic rod I have one thats about 20 years old and still going strong, retracts to about a foot long.

I found this pole holder on a search.

Im not sure what state you live in but i just found a colapsible fishing pole for $5 at a store called "BIG LOTS".
Its not all that bad and when collapsed its about 10" long.
I remember when I was a kid I used to bungee cord the pole from front to back on the top pipe of my bike like a big lance.
But I like the picture of that pole holder, just hope theres no low branches.

A telescopic rod is not as sensitive has a 4 piece backpacking rod. I use a 4 piece backpacking rod and I just tie it on to my Camelback with the reel attached to the rod. When I go fishing using the bike (or if traveling) I only fly fish because this type of fishing takes up a lot less space. The fly reel is small and flat (no bulky spools or a bail to bend), and I can put about 30 flies in a small flat aluminum fly box, a pair of forcipes, fingernail clippers and a knife and thats all you need, and this stuff easily fits into pockets on the Camelback or in the seat bag.

I have seen 5 and 6 piece rods but the more pieces you have the less sensitivity you have, so a 4 piece is a good compromise between losing sensitivity and losing packabilty. Each piece on my 4 piece rod is about 17" so assembled comes to about 5' 7" (you lose about an inch in height due to the connections).

By the way I have seen some people fasten their rods (minus the reel) to the underside of the top tube.
