Foo - Conformity.

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

This is a concept that I have been thinking about for a long time going now. The question that I'm about to pose may sound very vague; I apologize if it is.
What are people's thoughts on conformity?
All of my life, I have been the different one. I never tried to do it on purpose; it just worked out that way. When I was younger, while everyone would be playing around outside, I was reading (newspapers, out of all things). I always dressed differently than everyone in my family, thought differently, and acted differently. Unlike all of my (male) cousins, uncles or most Dominican men, I was never an avid girl-chaser, nor do I desire to be one.
This was noticeable even in school. From a racial standpoint, I couldn't even really be considered the "token black guy" in any group that I was in (which were few, and far between). I was (and still am) in a gap where I couldn't identify with my own people because I was out of the loop (kind of hard to describe), and couldn't identify with other nationalities because I wasn't one of them.
I've come to grips about this a while ago, and I don't have any problems with it anymore. It just strikes me that a lot of the activities that I've chosen over the years were ones that had very few African-Americans or Latinos involved in them (cycling included), and that I could never identify myself with groups that I was a member of that did have either nationality as a majority.

Conformity is overrated. Be who ever the h-e-double hockey sticks you wanna be. And have fun with it.

Join the club....I don't see anything bad about that.
I always felt that I didn't fit in with my family. I remember my mom jokingly asking me once, "How did you make it in to this family. You are nothing like anybody in it."
I don't mean this in a bad way, but my family are mostly simple country people. The only college degrees in my family are two cousins that both have teaching degrees. One teached elementary school for about a year or two and now lets her husband support her. The other is nearly 30 and still letting mom & dad pay for half or more of her living expenses.
I went out and worked full time to put myself through college to get bachelors and masters degrees in Computer Engineering. I can't "talk" with anybody in my family...except simple (non deep) conversations. That's why it feels good to now be 3200 miles away from most of them. Not because I don't like/love them, but I don't feel all that comfortable around them.

When I was younger, my Mom told me a pretty funny story about how I was almost claimed by Chinese parents that were right next to us.
I'm not sure if that was true, but that would explain EVERYTHING. :p

you can try to conform all you want, and then realize that you're still all alone.

^^^ Dang. You beat me to it.
I think there are very few people who have original thoughts. Somehow, someway, you are conforming with something. This is not an original thought. This is a regurgitation of something I heard and vaguely agreed with.
You can view it as either we all lose, or we all win.
Person A: I'm a non-conformist
Person B: Oh, ME TOO, ME TOO!

I find it bothering when people are different just to be different. They still aren't themselves; they just want to be different, so they try so hard to be.
Just be yourself. If that conforms or not, no big deal.
I disagree with everything said in this thread. Quickly, everyone join me in my disagreement!
