Triathlon - Wimpathlon - anyone else skip the run?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

My last tri was preceded by a knee clearout, and my surgeon suggested that I stopped running. Fine by me, as I hated jogging anyway. I got into tri anyway as a swimmer and then found I enjoyed the bike even more.

My 'solution' was to go up a distance, from Olympic to 70.3, and just get off the bike and go home at the end of the bike leg. I got some strange looks in the bike park and a couple of checks to make sure I wasn't stealing a bike, but had a great time and got a good workout. I think this is what I will do next season!

Question is, are there any other non-running 'tri'athletes out there? There were none in the event I did as far as I could make out.

The ideal event for me is a swim&bike, but there is only one exclusive S&B event in Germany that I have found.

Why dont you just do a tri as a team event, you could let someone else do the run.

registration fees are not worth a good work out to me man, why don't you just go for a swim before you ride your bike?

Both good points!
I will look into doing a team event next year, that's for sure.
Even the 1/2 IM entry fees are pretty low in Germany. Plus I can afford it.
Having a 'goal', i.e. some kind of event, helps with my training motivation. I need all the motivational help I can get!
I really enjoy bike racing on closed roads too. So those are the reasons - obviously they're pretty unique to me.

i love the ride and the run, but i swim like a stone, and have a shoulder injury that gives me grief on longer swims.
team events are the go :)

I discovered tris when I was recovering from two reconstructive knee surgeries (had a third to take the hardware out). I have made peace with the fact that I will never be fast, because I cannot log a lot of running miles. But, like you, I favor the 70.3 distance, and just figure if I have to walk much of or most of the run who cares. I still like it, and I still finish. Agree that having a goal helps keep the training going.

You could try racewalking. I'm a former runner who has IT band issues and took up racewalking 12 years ago. I've done 22 marathons since with no leg/knee issues.

I am one of those triathletes who had to deal with a nagging knee injury that made it difficult for me to run. I have tried the speedwalking route. That enabled me to do a half ironman. I ran and sped walk the run portion. I also have participated in teams, having someone run for me. One of the problems with this--and I think that race directors don't think about this--is the cost for doing this is very high. It would be cheaper to do two parts of the race and just drop out as you have. I try to get race directors to understand that two person teams should be cheaper than 3 person teams. Sometimes they don't think about it. The Muncie Endurathon in Muncie, Indiana will include a aquabike race next year--1.2 mile swim and 56 mile bike. I plan on doing that.

Can I ask what kind of time you get with the speedwalking? I am thinking about returning to that.
