These are the 2002 model.

does it take two people mistyping their bid in the last minute to make that happen?

Perhaps some people like myself who don't like the look of carbon.

What really kills me about eBay is all the fools asking (and paying) more for Brooks B-17's than LickBike charges.
Don't they know how to use the "shopping" button on Google???

there are always people looking for very particular things...them people must have really wanted those 2002's to round out their early 2000 italian frame.

The 2009 Alloy Centaur levers are better, and much cheaper.

I paid less for a brand new complete 2008 Ultegra group.

Whats so special about the 2002 models?

I saw a set of two Dinotte 200L headlights and a 140L taillight sell on ebay for $430. Used.

At the exact same time, Dinotte had a special going for a 600L headlight and 140L taillight for...$405. New.

Crazy.

In previous years, Record and Chorus levers used pivot *bearings*, while the lesser groups used *bushings*.
I don't know about the 2009 groups.

I don't see what the deal is. The 2009 10 speed lever has the same/better internals than the 2002 levers, and much better ergonomics, and you can get them alloy.

Yes, I bought one a few years ago at a bike messenger race. It also saw a 2000 mile bike tour last summer and is getting a bit "worn in".

I was in the market for a set of Chorus 10 spd brifters a couple months ago. I originally wanted alloy as opposed to carbon since my bike is old school steel. When I was searching on Ebay I saw that the old used alloy levers were going for as much as if not more than new carbon.

If I could have found new alloy levers for the same price as my carbon ones I would have picked them up, but I couldn't so I wound up with carbon brifters.

At the time it did occur to me that these alloy campy components were going for a premium and would likely continue to rise in value.

thing is, in order for that 666.66 bid to go through, the previous bidder had to have had that high a bid.

- bidder anxiously watching last 15 minutes of auction
- falls asleep during McCain campaign ad on TV with 5 min to go
- face crashes into laptop after severe rubberneck
- nose presses against on the "6" (darn you, NUM LOCK)
- bidder awakens after action has ended
- bidder screams aloud "****!"

^As mentioned, you can't run up an auction price all by yourself. You need help.

I say either two idiots working in tandem, or one idiot plus a friend of the seller.

The body on this brifter is still plastic / carbon composition.

So...this insane price for an alloy paddle and brake lever???:wtf:

Campy alloy levers are a hot commodity amongst Period Piece Weenies.

I spent a year looking for a Dura-Ace 7700 group to build my Team Polti Coppi Aluminum replica. I paid a lot more for a 6 year old Dura-Ace group than I should have, but I wanted it.

Wow!

I've got some alloy Chorus shifters in very ice shape on my bike and I'd kinda like to upgrade....

This is mildly tempting. If I knew there were a gaggle of fools who bid those up and there were at least 2 left who were willing to do it again I'd be willing to take mine off.

Ebay...
Some folks just give really poor descriptions in the title of their auction. If you are really looking for something, search for the item with letters transposed or even mis-spelled.
I got am 08 CAAD9 Helen's/LaGrange team bike with Ultegra SL, Easton EC90 bars and post, Fizik ALiante carbon rail saddle and Syntace F99 stem (no wheels) for $750 shipped from Cali to SC. It was a backup bike for one of the team guys and is in perfect shape. The SL stuff was new...
I've since sold the bars, stem, post and saddle for a combined $225, so I have $525 in the bike.
I added Thomson post and stem, Deda bars and a Flite saddle...all of which came out of my stock of spares that were paid for long ago, so the cost to this build was nothing.

It rides brilliantly too...much, much better than expected!:thumb:
