Advocacy & Safety - Dork disks (spoke protectors,):

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Where can old-style metal dork disks be purchased?
Cheaply, preferrably.
I'd like one for my bicycle, because the snapping cheapo plastic ones aren't cutting it for me, and I like the look of them.
Any hints?
And I don't think they're dorky.
Here you go:
Dork disks = "Spoke protectors."

Your LBS probably has a box of them stuck back in a corner somewhere.

proper adjustment of your rear derailleur makes a spoke protector unecessary.
I haven't seen metal spoke protectors in any wholesale catalog recently but perhaps J&B carries them, call a LBS, ask if the buy from J&B, then pursue that way.
Or, buy a cheap bike at a thrift store with one, pull off the disk, then re-donate the bike.
How about using a pie plate and cut it out tailored to your tastes?
PM me. I have some in good condition.
Loose Screws has some...

Buy an old bike at a yard sale for $10, take the dork disc off, and sell the bike for $25 on Craigslist.

adjust your rear derailleur properly and don't worry about a dork disk. It's nothing more than that, it doesn't protect your spokes if you know how to use your bike.

I understand that I do not "need" a dork disk, and I'm capable of proper DR adjustment.
But I can balance, so why do I "need" a helment? (I actually dont have one right now... :o)
But, it will protect my spokes when something nudges the bike and I am unawares it has adjusted my rear deraileur...
And plus, the old metal ones look really classy.
