Is anyone else watching this soggy game 5?

The Umps let play continue in absolute slop, UNTIL the Rays tied the game... then all of a sudden, it's too wet to play. They could have stopped play BEFORE the end of the 5th (it was already a gullywash) - but the Phillies were LEADING.

And I'm not even gonna complain about the bullshyt calls that Matt Garza got in the Philadelphia's 2-run first inning.

There is no way the umps are going to call the game in the Phillies favor without giving the Rays a chance to tie it in the bottom of the inning. That would be the absolute worst way to end a World Series.

If the Rays hadn't scored, they would have just kept playing I'm sure. Who the hell wants to see the World Series end with the players in the dugouts?

Game should have been postponed at the end of the 4th inning.

I'm getting turned off by how mlb has been handling things as of late. Selig has to go.

Voting for Philly? I want a recall in the primaries(the ALCS).

Finally, you have an opinion that I agree with.

Huh? Do you realize that the game became official at the end of the top of the fifth inning. Under the rules, if they had stopped the game in the middle of the fifth, or after the bottom of the fifth, the Phillies would have won the game:

4.10
(a) A regulation game consists of nine innings, unless extended because of a tie score, or shortened ... (2) because the umpire calls the game.
...
(c) If a game is called, it is a regulation game: ... (2) If the home team has scored more runs in four or four and a fraction half-innings than the visiting team has scored in five completed half-innings;
That would have been a terrible way for the World Series to end, and as much as I want the Phillies to win, I'm glad it didn't happen that way. I think that Selig would have ignored that rule and suspended the game, even if the Phillies were still winning, because the conditions had become utterly unplayable. But it was no advantage to the Phillies to have that game continue under those conditions.

Game should have been postponed at the end of the 4th inning.

No, the game should never have been played. Selig's statement that he didn't have accurate weather information is a flat-out lie. Every weather service in the area was forecasting that the rain would begin at 6 PM and intensify at 10 PM. I checked them pretty much hourly in the hours leading up to the game. I'm sure that Selig decided to try to get the game in because Fox didn't want to pre-empt "House," which is the same reason that they delayed game 3 rather than postponing it to Sunday night.

Either way, I wholeheartedly agree with you that Selig has to go.

The misconception that "the winner must have cheated" is becoming all too pervasive in our society.

While there was at least one poor call, I don't think it was cheating. If there was cheating, it surely wouldn't be to make one poor call on third base. It would have been somewhere else, since to get a runner as far as third is usually a sign that things are going well for the team anyway.

If Philadelphia had truly had any influence with the officials, they would have had the game called for inclement weather as soon as it was official, while they held the lead. By rules, they would have then won the game, and the series.

The weather certainly warranted such a call, if it weren't such a critical game. However, there could be a case made that they should have suspended the game before it was official. The field was getting pretty sloppy.

Selig determines whether a WS game starts/stops/is suspended, etc. Normally, your are correct, once the game starts the umps are in charge of suspension of the game. But this is not how it works at the WS.

If anything, the way things played out helps the Rays, not hurts them. As Darwin pointed out, the game could have been called after four and a half innings. Instead, the Rays got to tie it in the top of the sixth.

And the best part for the Rays? No more Cole Hamels. He's done until game seven, if there is one. There goes the Phillies single best pitcher and, quite honestly, the best pitcher either team has in the Series.

The game should never have been played, as Febs points out. Everyone (Selig included) had all the weather info they needed to make that call, but it wasn't just him. In the Inquirer this AM, it was noted that during the pre-game meeting everyone- managers included- gave the green light, in spite of all of the forecasts, which all predicted worsening rain by 10pm. Bottom line is that everyone (except for Upton and the cool double play on Bartlett's hit) was badly affected by the weather. That would include the umps, who made a LOT of questionable calls. I'm surprised there were any major injuries on the field with all that slippin' and slidin'.
