I got overzealous cleaning up a pair of old Veloce-hubbed wheels and opened up the freehub body and thus, the pawls and tiny springs. Sheldon told me to use a rubberband to keep the pawls in place and a thread looped through the rubber band to pull it through the hollow out the other side of the hub. Amazingly enough, it's given me more trouble than I expected:notamused:

My last attempt resulted in mangling one of the springs as I tried to force the rubber band through the hollow of the hub body. So now I'm down a spring.

Give up? One of these assemblies is going to be pretty $$$ to replace, yeah? Should I go to the LBS and ask if they have a junked off-brand freehub to pirate a new spring?

Has anyone else put themselves through this humbling repair process and come through with some advice?

I fought an 8s Record hub once. I wasn't smart enough to consult Sheldon, but managed to reassemble the thing with lots of patience and a thin bladed screwdriver (maybe a knife, not sure), pressing the pawls down and in one at a time. I don't think this method is what the factory had in mind.
