My bike is in "upgrade mode" i just got new hubs, rims, cassette, crank, and derailer. But the thing is, i have Rim brakes, and i won't be able to get disk brakes for another week or two. I dont want to ride my bike cuz my new rims are fairly expensive, and i dont want to wreck them by using rim brakes. The guy at the LBS said i CAN use rim brakes, but it will probaby damage the rim. I want to ride, but should i? :(

It takes me two years to ruin a rim with V's, Unless you are going to be that fussy about your bikes looks, and cover it in polythene to stop it getting dirty, whats a few marks on the rims going to do to performance. You wont ruin a rim with V's, in the short time before the discs are fitted. Plus the fact that the discs will give you so much confidence, you'll probably ding the the rim in a rock with the extraspeed you'll be going at.

wait...so ur all saying that if i use V's for a week or two, it wont rub the black paint on the rims off?

If you run V's on your black rims it will rub the black off in short order. I would recommend putting your old rims on for now if you must ride.

Matrix 750 rims? They came stock on my Trek 4300 and I have been using rim brakes witout any trouble. Wonder why the LBS guy said it would damage them. http://amdforums.com/images/smilies/extra/headscratch.gif

The rims were painted black inbetween the sidewalls. But the pace where the rim brakes rub is not painted at all. Here's a pic for ya:

I don't think that's what his rim is like. His actual sidewall is black..

If the rims are disc-only then they don't have a properly machined braking surface for rim brakes. I would not use rim brakes on them. Aside from possibly damaging the rims, you run the risk of not having adequate braking.

well, the whole rim is painted black, sidewall and all...and it CAN be used with v brakes.
