You know you can get a ticket for going over the speed limit on a bike on any road.

Ouch. That sucks. What's the point of having such a fun hill if you can't go bombing down it at 50 mph?

Speed limits for bikes should automatically be higher than speed limits for cars because bikes can do far less damage.

Whoops, I got this forum confused with A&S.

So skateboards, scooters, and rollerbladers can go as fast as they want? Cool!

You can do it, just don't complain about the ticket.

At 280 pounds (combined weight; rider + bike) and doing around 50mph, I bet I could do almost as much damage as a SmartCar doing 25mph if I plowed into somebody.

Part of the 'safety' equation includes the rider:rolleyes:

This sounds like a great topic for an episode of MythBusters!:innocent:

Strictly based on F=M*a, I'm sure the car has a greater potential for doing damage. But you have to figure the safety features of the car, vs. my safety features.

Car = Plastic/styrofoam bumpers
CGK1 = Plastic/styrofoam helmet (only reduces damage during direct cranial impact)

Car = Engineered crumple zones for frontal impact
CGK1 = Will likely crumple when impacted from any angle

Car = Large frontal surface area distributes force of impact
CGK1 = Likely to assume fetal position prior to impact, concentrating force like a cannonball

Car = Smooth frontal impact area (bumper, grille)
CGK1 = Has some pointy bits which have great damage potential

So, I've got some things going in my favour for this competition. :D

(1/2)m*v^2

Smart car = 1600 lbs, 25 mph --> 500,000

CliftonGK1 = 280 lbs, 50 mph --> 350,000

You'd actually have to be doing close to 60 mph to do as much damage. But of course in either case you'd be pretty much toast as well.

Yeah, but at least without that sign, I can at least TRY the "I didn't know" route...

Complain??? about a speeding ticket on a bike??? hahahahahahahhaha!!

I'd frame the sucker after showing it off to all of my friends :)

It's not a photoshop. That sign is located at the top (and bottom) of the road up the side of Kennesaw Mountain in Georgia. You can ask any Atlantan here to verify the authenticity of that photo.

On a 10% grade for over a mile, I'm pretty sure I could get close to 60mph. I did 54.6mph on a 1/2 mile 11% this summer. More time to adjust the aero positioning and I could squeak at least another 2 or 3mph out of it.
If I knew I was just speeding for glorious disaster, I wouldn't be afraid of a top speed and thinking about trying to slow down.

Trouble with enforcing bike speed limits is that speedometers are not required equipment...so how do we know for sure what our speed is?

It looks like that chain would slap the ground.

Edit: Or maybe it's higher up than it appears due to the grass.

Most I ever did was a little over 54 mph and it went on for a looooooooonnnnngggg time down a long hill (of course making my way up the horrible high rollers was just awful and so this was JUSTIFIED!!). However as I was crouched down over the front and WHOOOPING IT up like a banshee - I also took check on the sweaty palms (it was a hugely hot day out and I had spent the last several hours climbing) and so thought between WEEEE's - oh freaking dam, hope the hands don't slip!!! my face is rash - but WEEEEE!!!.

And then a week later I learned a good friend had a high speed wobble crash when he was cruizing a downhill in a tri-race in a heavy rain - crashing at over 60 mph and he ended up losing an eye, a couple of vertebrae and more or less crushed his right shoulder. Never hard of high speed wobble (he had his Litespeed bike checked out for everything too).

So since I learned of him - I've curtailed my WEEEE time - prolly only hitting 35 plus on a few downhills as I brake it down slowly (mostly cause there's a freaking nasty pothole and MAN ALIVE - hit that on a roadbike at that speed and it totally jars your teeth!!!!!!!!!!!!). Even still that's enough speed to rash the body. sigh.

Edit: Or maybe it's higher up than it appears due to the grass.It's pretty low, but not that low. :) Notice that the chain goes into a tube under the seat, so it's not hanging free all the way from crank to wheel.
