On Friday, a mechanic took off my cranks and took out my bottom bracket. When he put everything back together, I noticed that my pedals now squeak when I pedal. It does ride smoother, it just squeaks. I can't believe how much that seems to drive me crazy!

I will be seeing the dood on Wednesday, and I thought if I had some ideas of what was going on, I would bring it up to him so he can do something about it (hopefully). Does anyone have a suggestion on what could be going wrong here?

Thanks,

Koffee

What kind of pedals are they?

Two quick thoughts:

1) I normally use white or green grease on the threads of the pedals before attaching them to the crank arms. Skipping this might cause creaks (the pedals themselves might be loose on the crank arms as well).

2) Depending on the pedal/shoe combination, Bicycling Magazine used to recommend spraying Pam cooking spray on your cleats to reduce "squeaks" between the cleats and pedals.

Most pedals have rebuildable spindles (grease and bearings) as well. (As long as it's not your crank arms or BB doing the sqeaking.)

Let me elaborate.... it's like the bottom bracket is squeaking, not the pedals themselves.

I believe I saw him put on the green grease beforehand. I don't think this is a greasing problem. I think it's mechanical. After the lecture I got, I don't think I would ever put Pam on my pedals... I lubed my chain and got some oil in the bottom bracket, and when he took it out, you could see some of it in the bottom bracket. :(

Not a big deal, then, He probably needs to retighten either the BB or the crank arms, or add some lube. He should be responsible for resolving the issue. You could, however, prepare a lecture of your own about what a headache it is to squeak along on his handiwork... :o

That's my plan.... he lectured about how to prevent pedals from squeaking, then took my crankarm and bottom bracket off, then when I was riding home, I noticed the squeaking! I will talk to him when I see him Wednesday.

Did this ever get resolved?

Nope, but I'm supposed to be bringing my bike in to the shop, so I'll ask them tomorrow.
