Winter Cycling - Winter commuting on a vintage Raleigh 3 speed

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I just picked up a mint '74 Raleigh Superbe 3 speed, with plans of making it my winter commuting bike. I tested it out today in less than ideal conditions--crazy high winds literally blew me off the road once or twice. Has anyone had experience riding a Raleigh 3 speed in winter, and if so, how did it hold up? I'm concerned a bit about the heaviness and the slowness of the bike. I live in Toronto, if it helps--no major amounts of snow, but a lot of salt on the roads and wind.
The rest of the year I ride a Bianchi Milano, which I'm in love with but refuse to ruin in the salt. Maybe I'm just too used to how it rides?

i've actually done some winter riding on a 68' superbe and the fenfers and chainguard help alot. the skinny 26x1 3/8 tires cut thru light snow and are ok stable. get the knobbiest you can find in your size and studded if they even make them for your size wheels. so many swear by them.

It should make a reasonably good winter bike with the right tires.
