Foo - Anyone ever work at Target

Got a call back and made an appointment for an interview. I'm in no especial need of a job but I work hard and can use the money. I'm a full time college student BTW. Haven't had a job in a year and a previous job "laid me off" (fired me politely).

I have not but some of my friends have and it was the worst place ever. Then again you live in a different place so it will probably be different.

money is money, especially when you don't have any.

Have done my share (high school and early college) of fast food places, etc. However I do - and need to get another one - have a side job in the back pocket - normally I work food service - mostly cooking or catering - but have been known to work with a glass blower - wandering NYS for a couple of Summer's being a grunt and setting up a display booth/tent - and let me tell you - that stuff was HEAVY!!!

I miss food service myself. Hard unforgiving work, but rewarding in a good way .... I guess. (oh to come home smelling like BBQ sauce and yummy schmoked pork!!).

I would just dick around too much if I worked somewhere like that and probably get fired. Seems like you might do the same thing so I would choose differently. Just my 2 cents though

i have friends working both at the corporate headquarters and in the stores as managers- "expect more, play less" applies to how they treat their employees.

Long ago. Wasn't the worst job I ever had, but it was far from the best. Seems like it might meet your current needs though.

I worked there for two days.

I was hired the week before Thanksgiving and Black Friday, and specifically said throughout the interview process multiple times and my first week there that I can't work those days because of prearranged family gatherings.

Not a terrible place to work. You have to refer to customers as "guests" and that kinda gets old fast.

From my dealings with Target as a supplier, I would say they are one step below the Devil. Watch yourself there. If they treat employees like they do suppliers, you will be getting screwed evertime you turn around. I prefer to deal with Walmart anyday of the week.

I have no experience but since this is not an indentured servitude country, if you don't like it, you can quit. Give it a shot.

Oddly enough, no one has ever worked at Target...ever. All those "people" that you see are really just robots programmed to not look at you when you have questions.

I tried to work there one summer, told them I NEEDED to earn money for college and work full time. "Sure, no problem, we need you" and they the ****ers scheduled me for 25 hours the first week and slowly went back to 13! Yes, I needed to earn money for college and they scheduled me for 13 hours a week! To make matters worse, those 13 hours were 2 or 3 hours a day 5 or 6 days a week. I was furious. I hate those mofos passionately. I have known people that have worked at Walmart and they have not been screwed nearly as bad as I was. I'd stay the **** away unless you like that sort of treatment.

Most of the drugstores in my area are hiring. A smaller place like CVS isn't going to be as bad, I've definitely noticed that they haven't had that much employee turnover while I'm shopping there.

I've never worked there but have two younger brothers who did a few years ago. They didn't have much nice to say about it. Like any discount store, they said it sometimes boggled the mind to see how poorly managers often communicated with each other, and how it could be amusing to see how these communication breakdowns could cause managers to end up with egg on their faces lol.

Employees have to wear these hideous red shirts, and the story goes that this idea was borrowed from some kind of Japanese business philosophy that stated if everyone looks the same, the CEO won't stand out from the rank and file. Nothing wrong with Japanese business ideas, but American companies rarely seem to get them right. They trumpet about all the meaningless gestures they are enacting to make themselves into a "quality" organization while ignoring all the inconvenient but substantive parts of the philosophy that would actually bring about some kind of change. I think the company refers to employees as team members and talks about how each team member is a valued part of the organization, but I think we all know the truth about that.

Work hard, pay less. LOL I love it.

It's retail, so I don't know what you would expect. I worked my share of retail, but not Target. I know lots of people who work in the corporate offices, but no one in the stores at the moment.

I applied there for an overnight job back in college, they hired me on the spot, but then my first choice came through so I didn't end up working there. Had a friend who did work there at the time (again, college age) and she loved it and stayed there for a while after college part-time.

A friend of mine worked the floor at a Target during college back in small-town Nebraska. It was a new store, and they loved outselling the Super Wal-Mart across the road during Christmas. I didn't hear him complain much, if at all, and he often had stories of fun moments at work (a good one was broadcasting a Tickle Me Elmo over everyone's walkies).

From my side as a customer, the "guest" thing somehow makes a difference, even if it seems like it's just a word. I've always appreciated the help I've gotten when I can't find something, too, especially when the staff is on top of their game and can walk me there instead of just saying, "Go that way." And the red shirt-khaki pants "uniform" fits the color scheme of the store, doesn't look nearly as cheap and half-assed as Wal-Mart's blue vests, and helps me identify a worker when I need to find one.

(and, honestly, I don't mind having a work uniform, because it makes dressing for the day insanely simple and I don't have to worry about jacking up my personal clothes; did it as a pizza driver, doing it now in the military)

I guess what matters most is the people that you work with in that store (hm, just like any other job on the planet). Sucks to hear the suppliers' side of it, though.

The Target that I usually go to here isn't that bad, but I have to say it's nowhere near as good as the one back home, either.

A friend of mine and my brother in law both used to work at Target. They both seemed to think it was ok. I also think it's highly region-sensitive. Some places will have jerk managers, other places have higher state-mandated wages so it doesn't seem as bad. :)

Target drug-tests applicants, so I would never work there on principle. I pee clean, but will never work any place with that much invasion of privacy. Turned down a job ages ago at (Staples? OfficeMax? Some now defunct office company?) because they actually wanted to polygraph applicants...

Really! What's up with that??? I was in a Tar-jay the other day and noticed this huge sign, "Guest Services." I'd never seen it before, so I was scratching my head, trying to figure out it meant I thought they might have gone into the hotel business or something. Might be appropriate for a house of ill-repute, but not a freakin' store.

Back home, we had three Targets in town.

The one out in the 'burbs we called "Targét" (or "Tar-jhey"). The one not as far out we called "Target". The one near my neighborhood we called "Targhetto". ;)
