I've put about 2K on my Surly Cross-Check over the last six months, including a lot of time in snowy, salty conditions. LBS measured my chain and recommends I get a new one in about a month. They are NOT pushing me to get an expensive chain. I use my bike to get to and from work, and even in winter, I put in 300 to 350 miles a month. The bike is nine-speed in the back (Shimano), with two in the front.
I am not interested in doubling the price of the chain just to save an ounce, but I don't want to skimp on function. If the new chain lasts as long as this one, I will have to switch again before the next winter riding season. How good of a chain should I buy for the summer? The winter?

Since you have 9 speed drive train you must use 9 speed chain. Don't try to same money by using a 5sp, 7sp or even 8sp. They are too wide externally and will not work. All of the SRAM 9 speed chains are excellent. The least expensive is the PC-59. This chain has alternate black and silver links and works great. I have used a number of them. Occasionally I spend a couple of bucks more to get the PC-69 which is all silver. The more expensive models, PC-89 and PC-99, are just lighter for racing. There is no need to pay more for them. I get PC-59s at my LBS for 15-16 bucks and PC-69 for about 19-20. Most people seem to prefer SRAM. The Wipperman stainless steel chains are often recommended but are quite expensive. Although I like stainless steel fasteners on my bike, riding as much as you (and I) do rust is never a problem on the chain so I can't see paying for a stainless steel chain.
FWIW,
Raymond
