Smokers......figh1. Yeah, they piss me off. If you wanna ruin your life by puffin on some plant, fine. But don't expose me to that same ****. If you wanna smoke, go smoke in your car with the windows rolled up. But for the love of whatever-higher-power-you-believe-in, STOP SMOKING AROUND ME!!!! They are outside of every single flippin building, puffin away like they own the place. I'm allergic to tobacco smoke. I start hacking uncontrollably after being exposed to tobacco smoke.
I think it's time to start carrying a good supply of water balloons around campus......:notamused:

It's not truly second hand smoke unless it's exchanged while french kissing.
Guess you'll need to start lobbying your state legislature to allow smoking in buildings again. Then all those smokers will smoke inside and won't bother you when you're riding.

I wouldn't kiss any girl, regardless of how hawt she is, if she smokes. I can't even stand sitting next to someone who smoke. I can smell it all over them and it makes me hack.

I get asthma fits when I inhale too much tobacco smoke. And boy, there are a LOT of smokers on campus, hanging around the entrances of buildings, even if the law states that you can't bloody smoke within 20ft of any building entrance and operable window (in CA anyway, dunno about other states).
Quite honestly, I'd like more enforcement of that law here. I understand people's need to get high on nicotine or whatever, but not when I get sick because of it.

I used to date a heavy smoker (he's European). Interesting how clueless he was about how bad the secondhand smoke:
- He thought I minded the smell, nothing else (it affected my sleep and appetite, not to mention the long-term effects)
- He thought it would be good enough if he went out on the balcony and shut the screen door but left the glass door open
- He thought (and I believe still thinks) that if he hangs out of the window in a non-smoking hotel room, nobody will notice.
Nasty stuff. I'm done with that.

They don't bother me when I'm riding because I don't ride near any public buildings. Yes, believe it or not, there is a life other than cycling (say, getting an edumecation so I can get a good job so I get lots of $$ so I can buy lots of schwag) and the smokers are pissin me off.

As a former smoker, let me weigh in on this one...
You've already driven them off the airplanes, out of restaurants, bars, pool halls, concert venues; oh, that's right: ALL PUBLIC BUILDINGS. Now you're complaining that they're smoking where you told them to go: Outside.

How the heck does a peanut allergy relate to smoking? EVERYONE is affected by smokers. Peanut allergies only affect a small proportion of the population. That analogy makes no sense. I have every right to complain when smokers are endangering everyone's health.
And if you make the choice to smoke, then you accept that there are going to be consequences and limitations. YOU made the choice to smoke. Everyone else couldn't make the choice to immune to the affects of cig smoke.

You do realize that the EPA report on second hand smoke, the one that all the anti-smoking legislation is based on, was a meta-analysis of existing studies in which they hand-picked the data that supported the conclusion that they made before the study even began, right?
Walking through cigarette smoke on your way into a building, while unpleasant for many, isn't endangering everyone's health.

You're allergic to cigarette smoke. You're not speaking for the health concerns of everyone on campus, you're complaining because you don't like walking past the crowd of smokers outside the doorway. You're rallying to force a group of people who have chosen a completely legal product into whatever encapsulated, isolated corral you've envisioned so you don't have to deal with their choice.
Peanuts are a lethal allergen to some children (about 2% of kids have at least a mild allergy to some type of nuts these days). Because of this, the other 98% of students at many schools are not allowed to bring in any food containing peanuts. No PB&J sandwiches. No Snickers. Not even a single peanut M&M.
Until you organize a campus group or circulate a petition, it's just you whining about the smokers. Same as the 1 kid with an allergy forcing the whole school to ban peanuts.

More and more cities around here (southern California) are outlawing smoking in outdoor public areas.
I put the fault on smokers. They have to realize by now that people don't care for smelling smoke. If they continue to smoke in areas frequented by non-smokers, the laws will just get more and more severe. They can show a little consideration, such as not congregate around office door entries.

I have to say this smoking is a choice like many other things in life, you cannot violate others choices. I am sorry you are allergic to the smoke, however in the state of ohio smokers have only one place to go to smoke, outside (not counting grandfathered in places). If you deem an individual is smoking to close(25 of 50ft, I can't recall) then report it to your local board of health, after x amounts of complaints they will investigate the offense and take action. This method will take awhile but it's the American way, slow.

How about urinating in public? Is that cool too?
Smoking is one of the most obnoxious things you can do around other (non-smoking) people, and contrary to what smokers think, it's not because we have a hard on for giving them a hard time. It's because the cigarette smoke is truly obnoxious. I can smell it outdoors a good thirty feet away. Any closer and it starts to really irritate me.
I sometimes think about carrying around a spray bottle filled with an ammonia solution that I can spray in the faces of people smoking around others. Then they can see how it feels to have a chemical irritant forced upon them by a stranger.
Another thing that blows my mind is why it's okay to just toss a cigarette butt on the ground when you're through with it. The streets and sidewalks are littered with cigarette butts. Friggin' savages.

No. That's illegal. Although on every organized ride I attend, the legality issue doesn't stop a whole lot of riders from pulling off to the roadside and having a whiz in the shrubs even though there's port-o-lets provided every 15 miles.
Another thing that blows my mind is why it's okay to just toss a cigarette butt on the ground when you're through with it. The streets and sidewalks are littered with cigarette butts. Friggin' savages
I used to throw mine on the ground, but I handrolled filterless (or bought Luckys). A quick twist underfoot, and there was nothing recognizable as a cigarette butt, and the tiny bit of paper and tobacco are biodegradable. I never did understand why people think it's OK to just toss their still smoldering butts on the sidewalk or (even worse) out their car window. The filter isn't going to biodegrade any time soon, and it's a fire hazard!

I used to smoke, back when it wasn't considered a near-criminal act.
When I was in the Marines, I shared a room with two other Marines at Camp Pendleton, and they didn't smoke, and they asked politely if I would mind not smoking in the room, so we put up a No Smoking sign, and I quit smoking in the room.
I also have a minor issue with inconsiderate outside smokers. I think if someone is smoking they should be somewhat cognizant of anyone within about 10 feet of them, as this is a reasonable distance to try to maintain for the sake of others.
A face full of smoke while outside is actually more irritating than a waft of smoke from a neighboring cubicle used to be... Gosh, I can hardly even remember when smoking was part of my workplace. It has probably been more than 15 years now... And in the places I have been, they have also been clear about creating a smoke free area outside the door.
However at a local community college, I was disappointed at the lack of ability to follow the rules. There were designated shelters for smokers, with signs that stated that smoking on campus was allowed only in designated areas, but at least on the weekends (when I took classes) the smokers congregated right outside of the doors... right next to the signs saying "No Smoking except in designated smoking areas" :wtf:
Because both urine and cigarette smoke are obnoxious to the senses.
Pretty much, yeah.

I completely agree. I also hate car and truck exhaust. It most definitely has a much more negative impact on our health than smokers do. I hate exhaust!!!! My favorite are those people who drive cars that burn gas! Our gov't should really do something about that travesty.

I wouldn't mind it so much if the smoker's wern't RIGHT AT THE DOOR. If they would move out away from the buildings, it would make it much easier for me to avoid them. I could walk outside of the "circle of fumes" and make my way to classes without getting hit with tobacco. But they stand right outside the entrance, I have to walk through their noxious fumes. At least be a little considerate and go smoke away from entrances.

I used to have a college professor who would get up in the middle of a lecture and leave the classroom if he thought he smelled smoke. Nobody else would be able to smell it, but he would insist and then spend the next 10-20 minutes hunting the person down. He would always talk about how he couldn't breath or see around smoke. Watching him chase down a guy outside, 300 yards away on the campus was hilarious.
If you have some medical condition that makes you super-sensitive to smoke and want people to take that into account, then I guess you are out of luck in a public place. Going through a bit of smoke is not going to hurt you one bit. It is smoking or being trapped in a smoke cloud for hours, daily, for years that will hurt you.
In summation, HTFU!
