I'm a new cyclist and learning about cycling shorts. What's the best brand/model out there with the most support? Looking to spend under $100.00 on sale. Any great online deals?

I decided to wear the Novara Padded Bike Boxers (http://www.rei.com/product/763566). They are not bike shorts, rather they turn any pants or shorts into bike clothing. Now that it's cold out, i wear them under the Novara Headwind Bike Pants (http://www.rei.com/product/724365). In the summer, i just wear a pair of mesh shorts over them.

I even hear a bunch of people wear these under regualr bike shorts for added comfort on longer rides.

Ugh! I can't STAND those shorts! I really wanted to! Just won't fit my thighs at all...Waist was baggy, legs had almost no breathing room! They ended up dragging down to just above my knee where they had room. Not enough elstic in the thighs for me. Performance makes good shorts for cheap-ish. I use Endura shorts. Love them! Just looking broken in after a year under every type of pants and just themselves on longer rides.

Not sure what you mean by "support."

Everyone has a different brand.
I like Giordana silverline bib shorts.
Voler makes affordable clothes.
Performance bikes has decent prices on their in house stuff.

If you have a lycra phobia try something like mountain biking shorts.

Support for what?
Are you related to John Holmes?
Are your boys made of steel or concrete?

If you're talking about poly/spandex, rule number one is that you don't want shorts, you want bibs.

In that range, I'd be looking at something like the Giordana Silverline

I second Giordana although I did just have part of the thread that holds my chamois unravel after mountain biking...but a couple minutes at the sewing machine fixed that up. Silver line shorts can be found under 100 easily, the bibs can be found under 100$ in some places as well.

Lycra-phobia is over rated, people just care too much about what others think of them. I don't wear lycra on my commute only because it's 5 miles and I'm comfortable enough in jean shorts, but I do wear arm and leg warmers which make me look interesting.

As said before, everyone has a favorite. Collegue of mine uses Nalini, mine favorite however is Craft.

I wear Performance Ultra bib shorts for my commute and distances up to 200k. They're $80/pair, so you won't break the bank like with a pair of Assos. The chamois is thin but comfortable, the gripper silicone strip at the cuff is awesome, they fit like they're painted on but they're not constricting or binding anywhere, and the material is very breathable so they don't stay soaked with sweat.

I think I'd rather be seen in lycra than jean shorts. :D
