Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Movie review fun

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I just caught the last hour of American Flyers on the TV. I'm bored, it's cold, so I decided to browse the web on this "Quicksilver" movie because I haven't seen it since I was a kid. Did I mention I'm bored and it's cold outside? So I'm reading through reviews and what not and I come across the following:
"KB gives up wallstreet for a junky bike with no brakes to be a messanger. He meets a crack***** and fights her evil druglord pimp to gain the respect of the street hoods who call him KB."
It made me laugh so I thought I would share it. Is this the extent of the plot? Am I going to be terribly disappointed when I find this movie when flipping the channels late at night?

No more disspointed than when after you shaved your cat, you found out it's still a pet, and not what you were hoping for.
:roflmao:
dammit I thought I tol you people that's not my cat!

It "stars" Kevin Bacon, so you can draw your own conclusions.

funny thing about the movie is that in some scenes he rides fixed with no brakes and in other scenes he's coasting.
I've never seen the full movie, but I saw the trailer for 'Quicksilver' a month or so ago. It looked like a good movie to watch at home with a bunch of biker friends and some beers, and have fun heckling the hell out of it...

That damn movie hooked me on the idea of messenger work when I was younger, For good or bad.

bike setups used by "jack kasey" in the movie quicksilver:
fixed/brakeless, fixed/front brake, SS/Coaster brake, SS/rear brake, and one of those crazy bike ballet bikes with the zero rake fork, the little pegs, and the tiny fixed, gear ratio (it's something like 24/21 or somewhere near that). i spent an entire weekend pretty much watching only that movie and reruns of MASH on TV. it's a great movie. the race sequence between him and lawrence fishbourne's character "VooDoo" is pretty sweet, and the sequence at the end where he sees the mural on the wall (titled "california," BTW, and pretty much sums up MY feelings about this great state) then decides to make the gypsie drive off the end of an unfinished freeway overpass. his car explodes on impact.
i always think it's great in movies, when as SOON as a cars tires leave the pavement, they burst into flames. it's absolutely GRAND!
quicksilver is a great movie, but "breaking away" is even better...dirty cheating italian bastards
I can name two of the guys doing that bke stuff. Martin aperijo(?) and Pat Romano.
They were from the way back of flatland freestye. GT rider and Skyway I think. Funny bit of info about me, I have only once in my lifetime of riding a bike have ever owned a bike with gears. I rode a mountain bike for a few months when I lived in Arizona. From the begining it was all BMX, then I moved to Boston and got that last BMX stolen and went and got a single speed clunkerwith an expolding masterlink fixation. After that was my old Zeus track bike. I think it was 30 years old or so, I could be way off. After that I scored an amazing Basso track frame from someone back in the hoemtown. Then BLAH BLAH BLAH. I am sorry for the mindless rambling of my cycling life.

I don't know about the rest of this bike, but that gear ratio sounds perfect for some bike polo action... :D

I saw "QuickSilver". At the end of the movie it ocurred to me, "There's nearly two hours of my life that I'll never get back". The plot is thin and predictable. The characters are one-dimensional. The premise is good but the execution is lousy.
"Breaking Away" was far better. The characters were actually interesting and the plot was predictable but fun to watch. They must have actually hired a writer when creating this movie.

I finally caught Beijing Bicycle last week - an amazing film. Quite a good look at bicycle culture in China. They have entire lanes and traffic lines for them. Impressive stuff. It looks like riding Critical Mass. Quite some interesting bikes shown there, with some BMX style tricks done on MTB's.
Highly recommended.
Which reminds me that I need to go watch The Triplets of Belleville...

no no!!!
not to give it away or anything, but in the race that the kid is all excited about at the beginning, when he's all "THE ITALIANS ARE COMING BLAH BLAH BLAH!!" and then he races with them, and they're all on blue bikes (gios, probably) and he's trying to talk to them, then one of the guys shoves his frame pump in the kid's bike and sends him flying.
the indiana kids are pretty bad in that movie too, but i don't remember them cheating...i just remember them being jerks.

both movies are excellent. beijing bicycle was frustrating for me to watch. i kept wanting that guy to kick some ass...and then at the end, when he just stood there, watching that little sh*t destroy his bike? ARRRGH!!!!
triplets is just excellent. the quality of the drawings is just amazing, and the animation is top-notch, and the sound is right up there, and the score too.
