Hi, new here.

I was wondering what the general concensus is on the quality of GT bikes? Since it has been a while since they changed hands, I was wondering if anyone has had first hand knowledge of their recent products?

I have an old Trek 820 (about 12 years old) so am looking to get a new bike (plus the frame size was too big for me). All I want to do is take it out on the trails and probably pull the kids in their trailer.

I am looking at starting with an 2003 Avalanche 3.0 (good frame from what I've read) and then as the components start to go, replace them with better parts.

Any comments?

Oh, yeah, I'm not sure about the size, I need to get something in an 17-18" frame. Would that be medium?

I have never heard a bad remark about a GT. Look at www.mtbr.com for full reviews. And before you buy into someones bad review, look at some of the nit picky things that they dislike about a bike. Im looking into a Avalanche 0.5 for my next ride. Its got Deore all around, shimano hydro discs, Ritchey clipless, etc. all for a scant(by comparison) $749. Not bad if you ask me...

It should be a good bike for your purpose.

I would be concerned with longevity. They are still making quality bikes but depending on how much money they make they might not be around in a high end capacity much longer. This could cause problems with warranty.
