Welcome to Bike Forums!
This is our starter thread in the mtb section of Bike Forums. Not a whole lot on maintenance but you might have fun reading through it. Post number 8 has a section on tires. http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=67259

Depends on how well you want the bike to ride next time out.
I ride in muddy conditions so after every ride it is wash down the bike- Take the wheels out and spray everything metal with WD40 or the like. Go and have lunch and then polish. Find the broken/just about to fall off bits on the bike and reassemble.
Then 4 ride maintenance on a rota-
Headset and forks- Clean and relube
Cables- clean and relube but this should be done every ride if it is wet/muddy
Drivetrain Chainrings- cassette and deraillers- Deep clean and look for wear.
Wheels and tyres- clean- check for true and broken spokes and tyre wear and damage.
Of course, all of this should be done after every ride- but if you are lazy- like me- just break the regular maintenace down into smaller chunks. And if something causes you a problem on a ride- get it sorted before the next one.
