Commuting - Inexpensive bike locks

Anyone know where I can get some half way decent but very inexpensive bike locks? We're doing a give away program for kids so cable locks are probably the best bet, maybe with the number combos?

Any leads would be great!

don't cut corners on your lock. that is one thing you do not want to go el cheapo on. wicking shirts, yes, get em at Target. but get the best lock you can, locks are an essential investment in making sure your bike is still there after you lock it up.

get a good Onguard or Kryptonite lock. get a U lock and a cable and lock both wheels. I know that isn't what you wanted to hear but that is my advice.

If you're doing it for a non-profit community program, it might make sense to contact the lock manufacturers directly and ask if they're interested in sponsoring the program -- even if you don't get locks for free, you might be able to get some kind of discount. Just a thought.

i agree with others that saving money on locks is not the smart thing to do. i can cut threw a cable lock with any pair of house hold 2 dollar wire cuters, even a needle nose pliers with wire cutters can cut threw them. if i took any pair of sissors and a pair of pliers i can cut threw it. if you spent more than 50dollars on your bike get a decent lock, otherwise your better off using dental floose. even if its a cheap childs bike, get them in the habbit of locking it up every time.

bell makes some cheap 10-20 dollar u locks. i wouldn't use theses even on an old rusted bike, but if you really need to save money this one is 17 dollars at walmart. try target or even the dollar store for a cheap lock. or try ebay for used u locks, or cragiest list, might save a few more bucks. you could buy some chainlinks from a hardware store and get put a pad lock on it. again not safe at all though.

Its a kids giveaway program, probably in a low crime area. I know at my kids school, 9 out of ten bikes are in the rack with no lock on them. For kids, you have to get the combo cable locks that have nice, solid clicking numbers. If the numbers move too easily, the kids have trouble keeping them lined up. Kids also need a resettable combo, they won't remember the combo over the winter unless it is set to a number that means something to them. These two things eliminate the truly inexpensive ( less than $10) combo cable locks.

You can forget about any key operated locks with kids. Unless you want to practice your lock cutting/breaking skills a lot.
