The original... Wow, what a creepy movie.

Best movie ever made. End of thread. The special effects are still state of the art, (except for that stop motion stuff near the end) right now, and proves that digital animation still looks like ass compared to makeup FX. I could seriously watch this movie every night. Not enough good things to say about it. No annoying women in it, either. The local punk rock community loves it too, as they use A. Wilford Brimley lines on their concert posters.

I agree, a truly great movie.

Yeah this is definitely one of my favorites. I just haven't seen it in a very long time. Definitely +1 on the old-school effects. The stop motion is kinda obvious (like when the thing pulls the detonator into the hole), but I can accept that.

I think they made a remake some time recently - but I haven't even bothered. I know I'd be disappointed...

Technically Carpenter's Thing was a remake. Still a great movie.

I really liked that movie but it's been a long time since I've seen it. I have a vague recollection of a scene where everyone was in 1 room and they're trying to determine who was "real" and who wasn't by putting their blood in a petri dish and sticking a hot piece of metal into it. Good stuff...

I remember watching "the Thing" in the early 60's from behind the couch through the space between the sectional couch. musta been 5 or 6.

the only other movie that comes close is the first Alien movie, and maybe Night of the Living Dead, although the latter is sort of a different genre altogether

<--- likes The Thing. My uncle turned me onto it way back. Because it was him, I had low expectations when the film started, but soon became engrossed. One of my favorite Kurt Russell flicks. The original B&W is also a classic. That scene where they create a large circle on the ice with their bodies outlining what they see below... brilliant.

Yes - Carpenter's Thing movie was definitely awesome -- and when the First Alien came out - I have to say - I had at least three sleepless nights where I found myself awakened (from dreaming I think) - thinking where would we actually live if the Aliens had actually found a place down on Earth!

That movie got to me. There was one other movie that I will never know the name of - that I watched late at night when I was babysitting when I was twelve ----- and it was kinda stupid, but spooky but it was the ending shot where it showed the house from a ways away and there was two blood red eyeballs looking out the window. No music - just a pan out from the red eyes in the window of the haunted house and ... ARRGH!!

I'm sure if I saw it today, I'd say wtf - but at that time - it hit me good ----- VEWY SCAWY!!!

Now - that's not much to go on - even for google - but that movie was creepy - especially since I used to (now this is early 70's) WALK home from my babysitting jobs - and let me say - I hustled my butt home!!

The original Thing in B/W had James Arness playing as the "Thing". Both movies are classic and Kurt Russell made the movie, great stuff.

For you youngsters, James Arness was Sheriff Matt Dillon of "Gunsmoke" fame. I used to try to outdraw him everytime. :)

I absolutely love Carpenter's The Thing! I seriously don't have a single complaint about that movie. It was brilliantly cast and Carpenter did a perfect job of setting the tone of paranoia and mistrust.

I have a runnin theory that anything Ennio Morricone does the score for, I will like.

Still haven't seen the original black and white version. Have to put that in my Netflix queue.

Anyone ever play the video game sequel? Pretty good as well, but I still haven't finished it.

I hate and am afraid of clowns to this day because of that scene. It was 26 years ago and I can remember it like it was yesterday. Now THAT is some effective movie making.

agreed that it's a good film, J.C. is really good at coming up with "end of the world" scenarios, and I think that sorta thing scares me most because it's something that cannot be controlled.

I might have to dust that one off tonight after I finish watching "Halloween"..Another Carpenter classic.

Funny. No, but I did visit Magic Mountain two weeks ago. How about the story of the two slackers in the group who would miss call times during the making of that film, so they were replaced in scenes with other dudes.

What happened in the cut scene before McGreddy met up with the other dude for a drink? Is he the thing now? is the other dude? Will one of them thaw and start all over again? also, didn't one of the huskies escape? It's the best cliffhanger of all time...

Me and my brother did this in an adult Sunday School class while we watched some football movie. We kept it kind of low - mostly to each other and our teacher who was sitting next to us. But we got some snickers. And a few hairy eyeballs.
