Visit to LBS, and have now ridden the following:

Kona Dew
Giant Transend
Trek 7100

I wanted to ride a Kona Smoke, but couldnt find one in town

I'm current 315#, but wont be for long. I want to use it primarily for commuting, but my current commute is on the MUP's and would definitely like to do the occasional not crazy off-roading. I am also considering a Sprint Tri in June, but the idea of being able to spend time not on the road is appealing to me with a move to Northern Michigan or similar area likely in July.

I liked the feel of each in a different way. I liked how the Transend was loaded for commuting. I loved how quick the Dew felt, my fat ass felt fast on that sucker. And the 7100 reminded me a lot of my own 800.

Due to the economic slowdown, I can get all these bikes for about the same price (around $500 or less), some are 09, some are 08.

They had a Dew with the disc brakes as well, but said I might be able to get that one for my price range, because things have been pretty slow.

Owners of these bikes or similar who could provide input would be greatly appreciated. Also, never had discs on a bike, so would like to know about that too. Didn't ride it because the floor model wasnt my size.

How about some links to the bikes so we can see the components and specs?

I kind of like the Giant, but...

Have you considered upgrading from your Trek 800? I sold my Trek 800 earlier this year and replaced it with a '92 Trek 950 ($75 C/L bike). Components on the 950 are quite a bit better than the 800. I am a big fan of rigid mountain bikes for an all around bike. There are a lot of pretty good mtbs on C/L around here that would all be an upgrade from the 800.

Actually, my 800 Ive upgraded with components from a 950. The co-op had a 950 frame with components still on it, and replaced the shifters and brake controls with the integrated Deore LX (I think) from a 950. The bike just feels heavy and slow.

It sounds like you need the Dew. A fast bike is always good.:thumb: My sensible side thinks the Giant looks like a nice setup from the factory, but don't listen to him, he's no fun.

Are they all from the same LBS? If so, go with the one you feel you like the best.

If from different LBS, but from the LBS that you feel you like the best and will get the best service from.

Just my opinion.

All from the same LBS. The first one I've felt like a customer in instead of just someone who was there looking at bikes.

I know for us Clydes, wheels can be a concern. If i go with the Dew, should I be worried about the strength of the wheels? Rigida Cyber 10. Single walls. The Dew Plus has (I believe) the double wall Zac 19 SL. Are these strongly better?
