demand is low - even if it is "mass produced," demand for disc wheels are so low that the price of setting up a production line and R&D + making a profit while doing so makes the prices relatively high.

The competition isn't great either.

Ok, we've all seen them, but realistically why are they so expensive and out of the reach of most? I cant understand when someone produces one offs but surely today they are mass produced ar'nt they! Well then why charge for one wheel for a good complete bike wheels and all? Surely theres more involvement with a complete bike as there is with one spokeless wheel?

Why is it so? (no Im not that professor! lol)

Check out the Renn disk http://www.rennmultisport.com/~rennmem/store/commerce.cgi
A much cheaper alternative to Zipp/HED/MAVIC etc & it has received good reviews.

I have them in my Giant OCR Touring and I think they are GREAT! Of course, I would not have them on my other road bikes because of the weight.

Yep and it's great! With the weight load, disc are far better because you don't have to worry about the heat building up on the wheel due to a fully loaded bike

pletcgm, do you mean that heat build up in the hub is better disipated through the disc instead of spokes, same with rim heat?

If the rim heats up too much, due to the heavy load and if it is a long decent, the inner tube can burst. I would rather have the hub heat up, than the rim. That's all you would need is for the tube to burst coming down a step mountain.

I get the feeling pletcgm is talking about disc *brake* wheels and tourdecomp is talking about the aero (as in no spokes, looks like a frisbee) type.

OHHHHHHH...ok. that makes a lot of sense. I didnt think touring with disc wheels would be good because one cross wind on a fully loaded bike would just be asking to be blown over :D
