General Cycling Discussion - Is this a Made In China bicycle?

I guess most people selling on ebay either doesn't really know or don't want to tell you more information about these bikes. Not everyone knows how to recognize the model of every Schwinn. I guess that what the sellers depend on huh?

Sorry if my post was stated wrong. I guess I wrongfully assumed that most of these regular bicycle sales on ebay by people that have several bikes up for bidding and have sold many more before should know more about what they are selling. I guess if people are shopping for just any bike it may not be important to them about the model and vintage of the bicycle(s). It just seems that of all of the Schwinns I've seen on ebay, there aren't many that state what year models they are. Some times you get an answer and some times you don't when enquiring.

Where does China fit into this equation and why should anyone really care where a $50.00 bike was made?

I don't want to really go through the effort of dating it precisely, but its a 1984~ model when they changed to Cro-moly on the world sport. Its either made in Taiwan or Chicago. Probably Taiwan.

To find out its specific year, you could do so using the serial number of the bike.

The world sport would have been considered a recreational road bike. It was of decent quality, but not light weight.

Possibly made at their Mississippi plant as well.

I don't know where it was made, but I think it was made when people named Schwinn were still involved with the bikes named Schwinn. ;)

I think it is 1970s and fairly low end. Not worth $50 + $65 shipping. You should look on your local Craigslist.

Only way to tell for sure is do a DNA test on the Melamine from the grips.

I purchased a Schwinn World Sport from 1980 this year. It's not lightweight and the bike weights about 33 lbs. For some unknown reason, I like this bike. I like the way it looks with the traditional frame and top tub friction shifting. The bike just feels well designed from some reason.

I'll get on a hybrid with flat bars and my hands go numb in 20 minutes or it just feels too straight up and my rear end takes a pounding. However, the World Sport with the drop handlebars is just right, not too agressive like a road bike or too high like a hybrid. In fact, they made the bike with the right size handlebars since they figured a woman would be riding it. I love that, why aren't bikes sold with thinner and smaller handlebars for smaller riders?

Anyway, I ended up replacing the front wheel to an aluminum rim, rear wheel, derailluer, brake pads, pedals, and put new Schwalbe tires. I know this is a cheap bike but again, there's something about it that makes it very special. I wish bikes today were designed like this because it's much more comfortable over a long ride. The bike is a tank and can take a beating even after 28 years! It's not a soft ride like a comfort hybrid and it's actually quite hard. However, I can ride this bike for miles without pain because of the hard leather saddle and drop bars allow me to change hand and seat positions frequently. I really wish the frame was made of Reynolds 531 because it would have been a dream if the bike was 25 lbs.

I think the bike is worth $100.00 dollars today. It's better than 35 lb Huffy mountain bike for sure!
