I had no idea there was even an issue. My first view of India was a taxi ride into Delhi and one of the first shocks was the many different types of vehicles and bicycles on the roads, not to mention huge cows ambling about. I recall seeing a guy with no legs riding a bike by moving these pedals on the handlebars. There would be several people on a bike. Now they have to have critical mass? Although I can't really remember an instance of a woman pedaling her bike while wearing a sari, I don't know why not since I saw woman in saris doing hard labor at construction sites and even swimming at the beach. This article makes it seem like there is a woman's issue. Words and pictures can't begin to describe a crowded street in a large Indian city when I was there 20 years ago. Horses, donkeys, camels, cars, trucks, wild pigs, dogs, monkies, oxcarts, bikes, scooters, motor cycles everything all mixed up and going every which way. This article makes it seem like today its all car centric and bikes have been pushed out. Any Indians on the list who care to tell us how the cities have changed for bicyclists in the last 30 years?

Someone posted this a while and it's scary how bad things are. However, if they went to street lights, they would have start wideing the roads while bulding new highways to make it work.

I still think in the end, they will all be back on bicycles by this time next century.

I love it.

At least how alert you have to be to drive around there. Noticed there wasn't a lot of cell phoning and food eating going on while driving. :)

Things have really changed. No animals roaming around loose, no animal pulled carts, fewer bicycles. I remember when the taxi driver stopped for this huge cow loose on the street and we freaked he said "Oh, from America eh? It is crazy here, I get in more trouble if I hit someone's cow than if I hit a person."
