Texas - Grapevine Dam/Fairway drive commute??

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I'm trying to find some alternate routes to avoid some bad parts or just for a different route. One option looks like I can take Fairway Drive up over the dam but I'm unsure if that is viable at commute times?
Not worried about not being seen worried more about clogging the thin 2 lane road with no escape. I have seen a bike or two come up from that area but so maybe it is possible.

hm.. I read through it seems they are talking about going east/west south of the dam. I'm wondering about going north south on the dam.
My only option may be to try it way early in the AM maybe it'll be an early morning route. Then if that works maybe try it in the PM but it seems 26 ain't that great which I have to hit before even getting to fairway.. oy.

I cross the dam road twice a day in the car, and have been trying to figure out an option there for a lont time. An idea I haven't tried yet - if you look closely at the East side all along the road, down the hill, there's a road down there that covers about half the dam road or more I think. There's also a place in the grass you could ride (but, I'm on a tricross with 32's, don't know what tires you're on). Let me know when you want to try it out - I'll go with you. I see roadies on the dam road occasionally - looks scary.

Oops. Well the dam was ok this morning but the road which crosses to Royal it looks like it is only for a drilling or similar company. I didn't check google maps streetview just the map which showed it.
I ended up taking airfield drive across to freeport rather then head back to beltline which wasn't bad at 5 am but not sure I like it so much.
Positives
I do avoid the 121 crossing at the end of lakeside/freeport which is a bad cyclist intersection especially now with the highway rerouted to the service road and construction
If I hadn't gone down the dead end road it potentially could have been shorter
Negatives
The dam goes on seemingly forever and isn't as flat as I remember (bike topped out to 70+lbs didnt' help)
It is a long way from the dam to airfield drive
Airfield drive is a pretty poor road however so is royal north of 635 and freeport is getting waaay too busy recently.
Note: I saw the road beside the dam a bit but where the road isn't there is all the rocks and I'm not sure I could get across on my recumbent even if I wanted too.

Hello Evblazer. I commute from Grapevine to Las Colinas daily but I'm not sure I would have the nerve to take the dam road to Hwy 26 down business 114! Yikes! I guess I'll have to stop cursing the bridge over the toll booths now. So how's it going? Have you found a safe route?
