Hi, I am starting to get organized on building my fixed gear.
On sheldon's page a flip flop hub is mentioned.
Does anyone ever switch back and forth using one?
Are most of you riding fixed or just single speed?

I have a flip flop hub. I have never used it on the coast side except for the first day. Seems to be somewhat of a waste for me.

I have one as well...works fine in regards to same chainline, etc. I took freewheel off after a few weeks and run two fixed cogs now...two gears to chose from with the option of normal 48/16 or 48/18 for serious bonks.

i bought a phil fixed/free hub, with the intention of building a bike (the pink one i have) for my GF, but she didn't really want any part of it. got the hubs last year on valentine's day too. i brought them home and was like "look what i got for YOU!!" and she was all "i can't, really, you keep them." :( oh well. more bikes for me.

oh, and i don't use the freewheel side, i don't even HAVE a freewheel to put on it.

I have a flip\flop also, and have never used it. I've had the bike about 2 months. I've been doing most the club rides and training on it and haven't even thought about flipping it to the 17t freewheel. I run 48x16 fixed. Probably a little over 1000 miles so far. I can't see using it. I do like the sound of fixing the free side maybe a 15t.

The only time I used it was when i first got it and tried it out and when i went on a tour in the rocky Mountains. There you will need it, but hardly ever around where you live.

If you have never ridden fixed before, I would recommend the f/f because it allows you the option and options are good and you may hate fixed and ss may really float your boat or fixed may rock your world, as well as ss and then you will have, like I said earlier, options, which again, are great.

On the fixed side of the hub can also run a freewheel. Same threading, it just has the extra step down w/ reverse lockring threads that won't be used, so if you didn't like fixed gear you could run freewheel w/ no problem.

I run a fixed/fixed flip-flop (Surly) on my "road" bike (a Surly Crosscheck). I run 42x17 for the road and 42x21 for the trail - both sides fixed.
