This morning was the first ride in - good times. I made decent time too. A couple guys drove from the same place and left at the same time, and they only beat my by 10 mins. I got lots of great info on getting started from this forum, so thanks to everyone.

Congratulations! I hope you enjoy it as much as most of us do. I have been commuting 22 miles round trip daily for over three years and enjoy it more every day. I discovered BF right after I got started and have really learned a lot here.

The thing I'm enjoying the most so far is the funny looks I get from my coworkers. Its mostly because my commute involves going over the Ben Franklin Bridge between Philly and NJ. Its not really that bad though - just a long, gradual climb followed by a long gradual descent and a lot of wind =] According to mapquest my round trip commute is only about 10 miles. I'm already thinking of taking the proverbial scenic route to get in some more mileage...

Do you live in Philly or Jersey? How far in Jersey do you have to go? I live in Philly now, and my family is in Jersey (although closer to the Tacony-Palmyra bridge) but I've always wondered how feasible it would be to ride to my parents house from my apartment, I just haven't been able to pick out a good route. I'd also like to commute to work sometimes, but once again the lack of a good route is a problem. Trying to get from the University City area to Northeast Philly leaves a lot of traffic, traffic lights, and crappy roads to overcome.

I've done the commute to/from work a couple of times, but it wasn't too much fun. Hopefully I'll figure out a better route eventually.

Yeah I live in Philly now, and commute over to Camden. I wouldn't say that riding over the bridge is fun, but its not awful either. I'm not doing it regularly yet because I don't have good rainy day clothes. As soon as I stop being a wuss, I'll let you know how the daily trek across the bridge is.

I've walked over the bridge a couple of times, some really nice views. I guess if you're ever feeling in the need to do some hill training you can just keep going back and forth over the bridge a few times. :D

Way to go! And let me encourage you to find as many scenic routes as you can. That's the best way to really explore your hometown. Plus, you can turn a detour into a workout or a mental health therapy session. Can't do that in a car.
