Hey all - I posted this on the tandem forum as well, but thought it was more of a recreational, family thing. My youngest son and I went up and down the Silver Comet Trail in Georgia last year - doing it in short increments, finding our favorite places along the trail. We also headed over to Alabama and rode a short section of the Chief Ladiga Trail - heading west one day, heading east another time.

The sunday before last we decided to do the dirt section between Martin Road on the Silver Comet Trail in Georgia and where the pavement starts 5 miles east of Piedmont Alabama. What a NICE trail! If any of you are near, definately give the SCT and the CLT a ride. Both are great. We also stuck our noses on the Pinhoti hiking trail for just a very short bit. Looks like a nice trail.

Pictures of the dirt section of the CLT are here:

Still planning our next ride. Not sure if we want to hit the Chattahoochie Riverwalk, do more of the CLT, go up to Virginia for a ride, or maybe just pitch a tent in a local Wildlife Management Area and bike the service roads. We need a plan fast, spring break is coming up!

As a side note: for self-supported bike camping, how do you guys carry tents, sleeping bags and food? Not sure if panniers would do the trick, or if we should pick up a trailer. Also - does hauling a trailer add a lot more effort? Right now we are 2 up on an older 6 speed tandem. The tandem is good for rail-trails, but takes a lot of effort on hills. The thought is to go bike camping off the Silver Comet Trail in Paulding Forest and off the Chief Ladiga on the Pinhoti. These trails are pretty much flat.

Hello Bruce,

The Silver Comet and CLT are great rail trails. As you likely know once the unpaved portion is complete the entire length will be about 80 miles.

There are at least six other rail trails in the planning stages in Georgia and Alabama that I am aware of and some of these will be comparable to the Silver Comet and CLT in length and beauty. At a recent bike club meeting in Columbus a planning engineer described one such rail trail that, if completed, would run from Rome, Georgia to Columbus, Georgia!

I was going to suggest the Chattahoochee Nat. forest until I read you were riding a 6 speed. It would be tough with that limited a gear range, but.... if your willing it's really great. Plenty of places for camping, forest service roads to ride, and maps are easy to obtain.
