Heads Up - Brooklyn Bridge Bike Path Work Ahead
In order to provide safer conditions for cyclists and pedestrians alike the DOT will be performing work to upgrade the signage and markings on the Brooklyn Bridge bicycle and pedestrian path this Saturday and Sunday from 7:00 am to 2:00 pm. Weather permitting the rest of the work will be completed during overnight hours over the next few weeks. The bridge will be off-limits to cyclists during the hours when work is occurring. Unfortunately due to weather and other scheduling factors DOT may not be able to give advance warnings of the exact closure times. Cyclists are advised to use the Manhattan Bridge path or other routes. Bridge access maps are available at: http://www.nyc.gov/html/dot/html/bicyclists/bikemaps.shtml. We encourage all cyclists to ride slowly and respectfully and yield to pedestrians on these shared use paths. Thank you for your patience and understanding while these upgrades are made.

I saw the signs indicating this closure on Saturday. For some inexplicable reason, I rode from Manhattan to my home in Brooklyn Heights via the Brooklyn Bridge, rather than my usual Manhattan Bridge route.

The ride reminded me of why I avoid the Brooklyn Bridge, especially on weekends. Just too many pedestrians. Really. It's unbelievably crowded. The Manhattan Bridge is a much better choice.

Any description or pics of what was changed?

There are markings on the floor now to direct traffic. Though my intuition tells me that this won't do much.

What I want to see are barracks that separate the bike lane from the walkway.

I find it amazing that most people, tourists and non tourists, stay to their side of the walkway.
For the amount of foot traffic the bridge gets, that's saying something.

I noticed that too, this past Saturday. Still, there were so many pedestrians that they couldn't all fit on their side of the path. I guess I should have expected that on a nice Saturday afternoon.

I still like going over the Manhattan Bridge better. There's hardly any traffic, foot or cycle, compared to the Brooklyn Bridge.

I had the feeling some cyclists were feeling a bit more territorial, a bit more inclined to yell at pedestrians to get out of the way, now that cycling space is more delineated.
