My butt gets pretty sore whenever I ride my CycleOps. On the road, there's air between the tire and the bike. On the trainer, the bike is suspended off the skewer so there's no give. I'm thinking of buying a gel slip cover for my saddle.

Anyone else experiencing sore anus on the trainer?

Usually this is caused by sitting in the exact same position and not moving. You might not realize it, but even if you don't stand a lot, you still move quite a bit and shift your weight out on the open road.

Try to move around and stand more while riding the trainer and see if that helps.

Yes. The trainer is rigid while riding on the road you move around a bit. On the trainer I have to stand up a bit to keep it fresh.

I thought the trainer was an awful machine of boredom and pain (ok, it still is) when I got mine, but it definitely helps a LOT once you're on the roads. I did nothing but hard trainer work on 45-60min rides for the last month for biking (no road), and went on a 40 mile ride today, easily maintaining 20+mph with a bunch of much, much more experienced riders. (I'm pretty much a riding rookie - I'm a runner.) For sure, you can put up some really hard sustained efforts on the trainers since there's no declines, coasting, and traffic to deal with, which leads to some really good fitness. I'll be riding mine a LOT more.

Also, if you think about it... when your bike is on the trainer the rear wheel is a little bit elevated all the time. Just this tiny bit which pushes you towards the front wheel might be enough to cause discomfort since you are not usually in this position all the time.

And by being off the ground you don't get any suspension/cushion from the rear wheel.

How often are you airborne on your rides?

I use my trainer as a workstand. Also to check my bike fit. Never to actually train.
