General Cycling Discussion - Rebirth of Schwinn?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Went to the Schwinn website to see something about the cruisers and found this....

Rebirth of Cool? Talked to my LBS, and these are going to be a mass market thing. With the OCC guys helping in the design and going to be backing it, get ready to see a lot of them on the road. Funny thing is that Giant bikes has something similar in design in their 04 printed catalog. The Stingray is a 20 incher, while the Giant Stiletto is bigger.
I am just wonder what Pacific is going to next using the Schwinn name?
What do yall think? I prefer the old school canti frame.

Feh...damn thing looks like a Harley.
...or a Ducati...Personally, I like the original Sting Ray styling better; and I think Schwinn would be better off making good quality, updated reproductions of the original cantilever frame banana seat style bikes.
For cool hot rod style bikes, I personally prefer the Phat Cycles choppers, the Electra Rat Fink and Streamline series and Dyno Kustom Kruisers.

I'm still waiting for Giant to post info on the Stiletto on their web site. I can't find it, has anyone else seen it?

I have tried looking for info on the Stilleto on the net, nothing. The LBS I go to is suppose to be getting one in sometime within the next week or so. It has everyone that goes to shopping drooling. And wouldn't you know the first person that they showed the catalog to put his dibbs on it by already putting a down payment.
As for the new Stingray walmart.com is taking pre orders already. The guys at my LBS said that there is suppose to be a bigger version on the way. That was at least what they were told by their Schwinn rep at Interbike this year.

The Baby-Boomers seem to have a bad case of nostalgia. Schwinn and Walmart are hoping to cash in. This seems like it makes good business sense.
Kind of makes me wonder what will happen when Gen-X hits their mid 40's.
Nostalgia for the '80s and '90s seems like a silly idea now but give it a few years.

My next bike is a cruiser...I think they look sweet. (probaby a kona though)
Pacific/Schwinn is a joke. They introduce this in the mass retail cahnnels and expect the LBS to pick up the same exact bike. The press release we got faxed to our shop about this one was hilarious. They'll be coming out with a larger version with some OCC involvement, but they're not being specific on details other than that that model will be exclusively LBS.
On the reissue front, they already prebooked orders for coppertone Sting-Ray Deluxes and Grey Ghosts. If your LBS didn't preorder chances are you won't see one-they are scheduled to arrive beginning in June.
Personally, this was my final straw with these clowns-they seem hell-bent on alienating the independent dealer.
i thought schwin was crap now ???? btw how long have they been crappy?

Depends on who you talk to......
As for when it really went south (when Pacific bought them) that would be Sept 12, 2001.
Sometime this week I am going to finally get the tattoo of the Schwinn Quality badge, but it will read Original Schwinn.

Schwinn's have been junk since the early 1970's, maybe even before. For a while during the 1990's they tried to move upmarket but that didn't work and the company ended up bankrupt, sold to Pacific, and went back to making junk bikes again.
