Hi guys i'm new to this forum and want to start downhill biking. I picked up a carrera kraken yesterday for £240. Whats the minimum amount of gear you should wear when downhilling, full face helmet obviously and elbow and knee pads, would tracksuit and trainers be ok to ride in? i was also thinking of buying a proper riding jersey

You'd better be a smooth DHer if you are using an XC bike.

OMG you're right.

Carrera Kraken IS an XC bike...

but on BikeRadar, it said,

"...it's only really the precise and totally predictable handling and the fork's performance that makes it an enjoyable ride, especially on trails that point slightly downhill..."

Don't worry- You will make a downhiller as you have a headstart.

The only criteria for a Downhiller is that no matter much you normally use it- When Gravity takes over- Leave the brain at the top of the hill.

And add to your list some elastoplast- You will need them.

Oh, yeah, just go play around on your hill. You will do fine. Not everyone can afford a DH bike.

A hearty bowl should precede a good downhill.

Guess you haven't ridden much downhill or raced downhill. I find DH more mental than any of the other biking disciplines. You have to be very focused mentally...if your mind starts to wander, you crash; if you get hungry or fatigued, you'll get weak mentally and you'll crash, etc. I've never had it happen when I'm on the road bike or trail bike. It's a strange feeling, not like bonking on the road or trail bikes.

The tracksuit only works if it is white, velour and says Sean John on it.

Clearly you don't know anything about downhilling. Also acceptable would be a yellow/green Puma track suit.
