I got the studded tires out of the basement to put them on my spare wheels, when I saw a few of the studs had turned to rust. would they still be any good (until they get completely rusted away)? Also are the studs generally resistant to rusting, or is there any solvent or anything I could do to prevent further rusting? BTW they're Nokian 291??'s I belive, 3 years old, but I didn't use them at all last year.

It's probably scale, and not rust. Studs are made of carbide steel.

I wouldn't recommend any solvents, because it might melt the rubber.

I take it you have a wet basement?

no problem with rust. the more you use them, the cleaner they get. just like rail roads.

if the studs are rusted, don't remove the rust because it's just going to come back.

Ride on them; the rust will go away.

Happens with mine too. The whole stud isn't carbide, only the center pin. The body is steel and will rust.
