I'm looking to buy a SS 29er with disc brakes for under $1000 - what are the best options out there? Ideally I'd like this bike to pull double duty as a mountain bike and possibly with a second set of skinny tires as a baby trailer/bike path bike as well. Thoughts?

Surly Karate Monkey complete is slightly above 1k. Kona Unit is slightly below 1k as is the Redline Monocog Flight I believe. There's a GT Peace 29er that is on Performance bike's site that is sub 1k as well. Personally for what you are talking about I'd look at the Karate Monkey it's a pretty versitle rig.
