I ride a 03 Specialized BigHit Comp and the spring in the rear is a 650x2.25. I just found a spring at a LBS that is 550x2.29. Will I have any problems fitting this spring on my shock? The lengths look the same.

It will be fine. I run a 650x2.35 on mine. How much do you weight. Do you feel the 650 is too stiff?

Yes I find the 650 too stiff. I have the shock position in the most linear position and I still can't even come close to bottoming it on 4ft to flat drops. I think I am running like 5-10% sag with this spring. Also I find I almost get launched off the bike if I encounter a big dip in the trail.(yes my rebound is set properly) I hope the 550 feels smoother. And if not, than I'm out $30. Oh well.

Jeez...what weight are you. Did you check the fox site for weighted spring. If you can only get 10% sag max that is no where near what you should have on that bike.
I can't find required spring rates but I would email fox first. 550 still sound too stiff if you are only acheiving 10% sag AND being bounced around on 1 click of rebound (I assume you are running rebound as low as possible)
