General Cycling Discussion - Team Vegemite!

A bit of a long shot, but here goes. On a ride last night, a friend of mine was wondering about the possibility of getting hold of a cycling jersey with the Vegemite logo on it. As someone who was raised on a giant jar of Vegemite, I think this is a wonderful idea.

If there isn't one, is it possible to get one made without breaking the bank?

Talk to Kraft first. You might be able to get one made without breaking the bank, but not without breaking trademark law. Do you really want to be a mobile advertisement?

Vegemite is one of those things that you need to be introduced to (indoctrinated?) at a very young age. Vegemite on toast is often a young Aussies first solid food. My boys (2 & 5) love it - so do I for that matter.

For my 21st birthday (see- I can remember stuff from all those years ago) a group of friends gave me a heap of Vegemite stuff.

If I remember rightly there was a jar of the stuff - a tea-towel - a beach towel - a mug and maybe one or two other bits and pieces.

Personally, vegemite is OK... but promite is just in a different league. Now that is YUMMY.

If you're suckered into buying some to try and can't find a use for it you can use it in recipes...

Grilled cheese on toast... spread just a little bit on the bread before you put the cheese on and you'll be in heaven.

Bring a head of cauliflower in a vegetable (or chicken, or veal) stock and cook until tender. Add a good teaspoon (or three) of vegemite/promite/marmite and stir through. Puree and consume with toast. Quick, easy and healthy.

Can't say I've come across any Vegemite type jerseys. There are a few Australia/Aussie themed ones about... Would you like me to dig up the URLs? I can't point you to any Australian based custom jersey makers, but there's lots around overseas but you're looking at $50USD approx and minimum 10-15 quantity order.

To be honest, being a "mobile advertisement" doesn't bother me either way. It's actually extremely difficult to buy a cycling jersey without at least some kind of logo on it (admittedly, some are smaller than others). Even my Cannibal factory seconds jerseys have their logo on them. At least Vegemite is something that I personally use, which is more than can be said for most of the advertisements on other jerseys I see around the place.

After experiencing vegemite for breakfast numerous times in Sydney, I now can't eat toast without it. I've not run across it anywhere in Memphis, so when I visit Albuquerque (4x yearly) I pick up 2-3 jars at this rather eclectic food mart on route 66.
Now, just tell me where I can order my jersey!

During our 3 weeks in OZ last year, I was curious about vegemite. I would not personally say it is horrible, but just had a rather salty flavor to me. Local folks seemed to love it though!

Vegemite is the Australian equivalent of the UK's Marmite. I cant stand either but they have their use. (I can only think of one) On the longer bike rides that I do, I get fed up with the taste of the drink additive, and glucose tablets and powerbars. It gets to the stage where if I so much as look at the bottle, I upchuck. A couple of Marmite sandwiches works wonders, clears the palate completely, gives an overdose of essential salts, and reminds me of yet another reason as to why I won't be entering any more gruelling rides, until the next one.

BTW. I have seen Marmite cycling jerseys in the UK.

Hmmm. 10-15 is probably a few more than I was looking for. As far as the traditional Australian themed ones go, I tend to get a bit tired of the ol' kangaroo or koala that seems to attach itself to just about everything on that particular topic. Maybe I could find a way to alter one of the Marmite ones from the UK.

My GOD! A yank who loves vegemite! What's the world coming to? :eek: Actually, I managed to convince a frenchman to try it when I was in Tasmania, and he didn't mind it either. Maybe it does have a universal appeal after all!

Sort of off topic.... in that it relates to tips for Marmite / Vegemite, but not jerseys. The magic stuff, marmite in my case, is an excellent addition (about a teaspoon full) when making gravy for a roast beef joint.

I understand the vitamin B2 in Marmite/Vegemite aids the flow of carbs into the muscles so is a great supplement to take for strenuous execise. It is water soluble and the body doesnt retain it, so it must be taken immediately before the execise.

I had to buy some Vegemite last month then the supermarket was out of Marmite - it spread easier but only tasted like imitation Marmite.

True. I heard some Vegemite horror stories before I visited Australia last August, so of course I had to give it a go. Good stuff! Keep us posted about the jersey, I just might be tempted to wear one...
