Mike,
There are a number of good brands. Take it from experience; don't buy $15-20 shorts from Nashbar, Performance, etc.. The pads are thin and poorly stitched, coming loose after a few wearings. The better shorts from both might be OK. I haven't tried them, but I know people who use Performance regularly. Plan to spend about $40 for a pair of good shorts. I have several brands. Voler (velowear.com) seems to make pretty good stuff at a reasonable price. Giordana, Castelli, Assos, Nalini, Santini, etc., are good thoughs some of them are extremely expensive. Also, you might want to consider bibs over regular shorts. Many, including me, find them more comfortable. It gets very hot and humid here, but I don't find bibs any warmer than shorts. Depending on your size you might find some good shorts on clearance at sierratradingpost.com or longscycle.com. IMPORTANT NOTE: Some brands, particularly European brands, use a completely different sizing table. Where XL might be waist size 42-44 in a US brand, some European brands call 35-37 XL.

Thank you for all the info, I appreciate it.
Try Voler bibs. www.velowear.com
Much more comfortable than shorts. Lots of colors (visibility) and good prices too - $32.95 to $59.95 (US).
