Northern California - First Real Bike Accident

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Riding along minding my own business, when a lady in a car comes out of nowhere with an unsafe left turn (no indcation she was planning on doing anything but go straight) into a shopping center driveway so she could save like 30 seconds. (By Northgate Mall in San Rafael).
I had no choice but to stop or else i was heading right for her windshield. Locked up the brakes on my two month old P2C. Flipped over, landed on my shoulder (separated) and both wrists (both broken) and helmet (cracked). Thank god, the helmet did what i was supposed to do, I think. Nobody thinks I did damage to my neck or head but we re-evaluate tomorrow when I also see the orthopedist.
Seriously though, while I can type with two fingers, I can't hold anything to eat or drink, and I haven't even begun to figure out how I'll wipe my *****.

Bummer!
Good to know you are alive with no lasting injuries, and kept your sense of humor.
Heal fast!

Bummer. Hope you figure out the sanitary issue!
I have my own opinions about women driving anywhere near shopping centers even while driving my car, but avoid the shopping centers totally on a bike! Get her to take any responsibility?

That's too bad ... hope you heal up fast. And yes, at least you are able to keep your sense of humor about it all.
If there's one thing I've learned, bikes and shopping malls ... bad combination.
Sorry to hear that - but glad you're relatively OK. What did the lady say, or was she oblivious to the mayhem she'd caused?
Personal cleanliness sounds challenging, but more discussion on this topic would likely be TMI. Err -- how's the bike?
Hey, welcome to the Left-Hook Club! I was inducted about a month ago. :hmm:
Glad you made it through as well as can be expected (and I'm sure by now you've realized how easily it could have been a lot worse). Hope you have some good drugs, and heal up quickly and correctly.

Heal soon!
Wish you a quick recovery! Thank your helmet in particular for "just" broken bones ...
Had a crash myself back in Aug where I broke my collarbone, and thanks to the helmet, which also broke, I'm back on the bike again.

Thanks. She kept saying, "I never would have hit you." I said thanks but what /good does that do me now. I think she felt bad, never really tried to deny that It was her fault, but I don't know what she said to the cop. I think her jaw dropped when he asked how much the bike was worth, and I said about $6k. We'll see how it works out. Despite being a litigator for a major Internet company (do us a favor and search a little with that other search engine, the one that does not rhyme with Koogle), I am not litigious.
My two month old bike is totaled. Large crack straight through the top tube. My Jet 60s and Powertap looked like they made it through, and I probably can save the gruppo, and maybe aerobars (I was not in them at the time thank god). Like everybody here, I *loved* my bike. I wanted an 08 P2C Dura Ace colors for so long and bought it right before the model year changed. But, heck there's a lot worse in life that could happen. I am still just happy to have discovered this sport after I had to have my knee reconstructed twice following a bad skiing accident two years ago (I was more worried about my knee than my head).
Pommi, glad you're okay too. I am a much more careful driver since I started riding, but I learned to be even more so now.
Wow! That's awful. Hope it doesn't get any worse. Best of luck on a full and complete recovery.
You have a very healthy take on all of this.
Sorry about the bike too, still an opportunity to get a new bike all over again. :thumb:

Yikes!! How awful for you!
I hope you work out those "issues." And I hope she makes full remuneration for your bike and injuries.
Speedy recovery!

Crap! Whoops, bad choice of words. Hope you heal quickly. Does that search engine rhyme with wahoo? I'm glad you're alive to heal.

Was she driving a Basic Marin Wheels? I'm sorry to here about your accident and I'm glad to see you're not in worse shape. I really don't like some of the drivers in that area but have to endure it to visit the Fiance's sisters.

my dog used to do this thing were he would stick his hind legs up in the air and dragged himself around with his front paws.

Sorry to hear about your accident :(, glad your helmet protected you.
I also had a broken wrist from a bike accident (years ago), but just one. I can only imagine how much more difficult life would be with two.
Best of luck healing up quickly.
Oh, and might I suggest a Japanese-style toilet? ;)

Wow. Heal up fast and I'm hoping you don't have any long term back or neck issues that you don't know of. I hope you get at least the cost of the bike and medical bill taken care of even if you don't want to litigate.

My brother "test drove" on of these that's installed at a friend's house here in the Los Altos area. He said it was exillerating! I had the opportunity but didn't take it...now I regret I didn't take it for a spin.
Sorry to hear about your accident. Glad the woman stopped and didn't just drive right on.
Best wishes and get well soon.
You seem to have a better attitude than I could imagine. I have been knocked down 1 time by a too-quick right turn and though I wasn't badly injured (scrapes and bruises) I was filled with a murderous rage. You're a better man than I!

Laughed out loud on that.
Last update I promise: the good thing (one of a few) about narcotic pain killers is the constipation. We didn't have to solve my largest problem. Yet.

Ah! I guess I couldn't add 1+1.
get well soon!
as for the sanitary issue... get a toto! (those toilet covers that spray water) my parents installed one in their bathroom... it was about $99... it can shoot warm water too!
Hope you heal fast. As for the wiping issue, what you need is a bidet. It is an mandatory piece of equipment on most hispanic countries. I haven't seen one on the states tho, but conversion kits can be found... take a look here (http://www.treehugger.com/files/2008/04/bidets_eliminat.php).
