Commuting - Favorite rear rack + trunk combo

I just bought a Surly LHT as my all-around bike. In addition to some light commuting around town, I'd like a trunk pack large enough to carry a good size lock, a couple of jerseys or jacket, and extra food, one that's durable and water-resistant.

I don't want to pay top dollar just to carry a few light items; however, I am willing to pay for a quality item that will go the distance for many years to come and I won't need to replace it in a few years -- perhaps if (when) we start light touring one day, it will still be going strong and can carry a heavier load.

Does anyone have a favorite rack and trunk combination, especially one that fits on a Surly LHT?

The first question to ask yourself is 'How important is removing the trunk from the bike?' Since I don't have a secure place to leave my bike, I end up stripping the bike of the trunk-bag and panniers every day. If you don't care about removing it frequently, skip the rack/trunk combos. Most non-quick release trunk bags will attach to just just about any rack.

I use a Detours rear trunk. It attaches to the seat post with a clip that stays on the seat post. You can remove it or install it in a second. For what you are describing in typical cargo, it is a good option because you can not only take it with you when you go into a store but you can also leave it at home if you aren't carrying anything on a particular trip.

If removing said trunk bag is important to you (like you want to take it with you when you go into stores or the office) then something like the Topeak QuickTrack system is quite nice.

I use a MTX Trunk Bag DXP with a MTX Beamrack (seatpost mounted) though I think one of their full racks with the QuickTrack system is probably more stable.

I've used this (http://www.nashbar.com/profile.cfm?sku=6801) for 2 years, and have been really happy with it. Plenty of room for an extra layer, snacks, hand cleaner, tube, multi tool, windbreaker and the extra batteries I should have brought with me last Thursday night.

I use a Topeak Explorer rack and Topeak MTX Trunk Bag DXP. The combo works great, even with the rain covers.

Edit: I had TOPEAK RACK BEAM RX with sides. I found that I carried to much weight for that rack.

I ride a Cross-Check, and what works for me is a Delta cargo rack paired with an Axiom "Columbia" rack trunk. Installation & removal of the trunk bag is a snap, with 4 velcro strips, one at each corner of the bag, holding everything in place. A nice feature about the Columbia is that the outside pockets fold down and out to give you a pair of panniers when needed. Cost was about $30 for the rack, and $42 for the trunk bag.

Another vote for the Topeak MTX rack system. Slips into and out of the rack very quickly. There are a variety of trunk bags that work with the system. The trunk bags also feature velcro straps for extra security or to attach to non-topeak racks.

I don't think removing it will be a priority. I like the Topeak products a lot... I have their bag that mounts on the front of the bars and I think their products seem very durable and a good value.

I was all set to call Wayne at The Touring Store and order the Tubus Cargo, and asking him about his suggestion for packs that work with it.

Once again, lots of choices........
