So before today, I've never actually "hit the wall" as endurance athletes say. But today on my usual 25 mile hill-heavy ride, I decided to just go til i got tired. The weather was perfect and I was just full of energy from an actual full night's sleep the night before. But around mile 45, I discovered what it was to "bonk." All of a sudden, I just couldn't ride up any steepish hills or go over 18 mph's no matter how hard I tried. I felt like killing myself when during my 6 miles back home. I only had the emergency gel in my saddle bag which I took around mile 25. To drink, I had a 24 oz bottle of water and 24 oz bottle of about 200 calories in powerade. I wasn't sweating an extreme amount and had a few water fountain stops so I'm sure I wasn't dehydrated. Where does everyone else

Ok so long story short: At what point does everyone need to make sure they have food so that they don't bonk? I'd like to avoid another today.

I take food if I'm going to be out longer than two hours. If I'm going out that long I also make sure to have a good meal before I ride. For the rides where I don't know how long I will be out, I usually carry a Cliff bar or something "just in case". Sometimes I need it and sometimes I don't.

I usually take something with me if I'm riding an hour or more, and my ride is mostly hard. If it's an easier ride, I usually bring food if the ride is two hours or more.

That doesn't sound like a bonk to me
