Hey everyone, Henry is going to Switzerland! I'm sure he'll have a great ride report for us, maybe on the idea of something like this:

Over the last few years I rode up and down lots of the high passes of Switzerland, mostly riding single-day loop routes. I found lots of fun + pretty riding (not a surprise), and I'd gladly do lots of it again. This year I finally connected it all into a continuous route, so I've ridden every kilometer from Grand St Bernard in the southwest to the Bernina pass in the southeast, most but not all on paved roads. And because I rode so much of it as loops, also a second route from east to west. I put together a set of
reports + suggestions about the high passes
+
map . . . (http://www.roberts-1.com/b/v/e/08c/index.htm#Switzerland_high_passes_08sep)

The reports have lots of ideas about loop rides and up-and-back climbs that could be done while spending several days at a single base -- and also ideas about multi-day "moving on" tours, not just one route, but different alternatives for most of the stages. I say which roads I liked best and why, and which parts I didn't like and would avoid.

I'd be glad to hear other suggesions (and corrections) for routes + riding.

Surprising for me: Trying to ride every kilometer between southwest + southeast forced me to "fill in" between passes on some gentle valley roads and paths -- but I discovered those were rather pretty and fun, and added variety to my overall experience of Switzerland.

So now I feel more interested to attempt riding all the way across as a continuous multi-day tour - (but more likely I'll repeat some of my favorite loops and up-and-back rides).

Have fun Henry and tell us all about your junket!

Pete

Hi guys and gals,

I've been meaning to post about the trip but it's been so busy with Halloween and getting ready to go that I haven't had 10 minutes straight sitting at the computer.

My wife works for an Au Pair agency and each year if she makes enough au pair/host family matches she qualifies for a free trip to where ever the agency is having their international bonus trip. She has qualified two years now but last year I couldn't go to Nice, France because of the car hitting me. This year, it's Luzern, Switzerland. The trip is pre-planned with a semi-rigid itinerary so I won't likely be able to do any riding (unless I can rent something for an hour or two). I hope to try to get to some bike shops if there are any so if anyone has any suggestions, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks,
Henry

This year, it's Luzern, Switzerland.

Henry - My Grandmother was born and grew up in Luzern. It is absolutely beautiful there. Switzerland is so clean my wife swears that someone comes out every night to vacuum the streets... And all the cows grow with their "uphill-side" legs shorter than their "downhill-side" legs, so that they can walk across all the steep hills without falling over!

Have a great time!

No chance to bike while I was there. I've only visited that part of Switzerland as a side trip to business travel.

Oddly enough I was in Switzerland last week, but alas, my only excitement on the trip was French customs going through every f***ing bag in our car and pulling receipts out of our wallets looking for proof that we were either terrorists or smuggling Swiss chocolate into the country. :notamused:
