This press release from the Madcross mailing list:

(snip) ... Expect not one but TWO stair run-ups on the sled hill!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Northbrook, Illinois- “SAVE FERRIS,” a cyclocross race, will be coming to Northbrook November 9, 2008 at Wood Oaks Green Park as part of the Chicago Cyclocross Cup series. Riders from around IL and WI will line up for a full day of racing in 10 categories that range from beginners and juniors racing for swag and cowbells to elites and professionals racing for dough and perhaps a 'Gummi bear? It's been in my pocket. They're real warm and soft'.

"SAVE FERRIS" is promoted by the Northbrook Bike Club and the Flatlandia Cycling Team with the assistance of the team’s sponsors: George Garner Cyclery, Sunset Foods, the Landmark Inn, Northbrook Bank & Trust, and the Northbrook Park District. Unfortunately, Ferris is too sick to attend and Ed Rooney could not be convinced to officiate the race.

Cyclocross racing is a specialized form of racing where 'only the meek get pinched, the bold survive'. It requires riders to race on a closed-loop circuit, over grass, pavement, gravel, and mud, with barriers and steep run-ups mixed in for additional challenges. Races (by class) vary from 30 to 60 minutes. The pace is frenetic, with little time to rest and less opportunity for “slipstreaming,” as in road races. And no, the 1961 Ferrari 250GT California will not be the pace car. (Cameron killed it)

Promoters Chris Henning and Jason Meshberg said, “Despite Ed Rooney's contention that bike racing is 'A first class ticket to nowhere!', we are excited to be a part of the fastest growing segment of bike racing. An added benefit is that proceeds of the race will support local bicycle safety education initiatives."

While Sloane will not be racing (boo!), Chicagoan Rebecca Much, a five-time U.S. National Champion and Silver medalist at the 2004 Junior World Championships will be. (Yeah!)

The Northbrook Bike Club is an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) which organizes and promotes kid cycling events at the Northbrook Park District’s Ed Rudolph Velodrome during the summer and works to promote bicycling and bicycle safety throughout the community.

Also, the NBC does not condone fascism, or any -ism for that matter. -Ism's in the opinion of the NBC are not good. A person should not believe in an -ism, he should believe in himself. To quote John Lennon, "I don't believe in The Beatles, I just believe in me." Good point there. After all, he was the walrus. You could be the walrus. And the NBC still has to bum rides off people.

There is also the Viking 'Cross in Stoughton, WI on Sunday for those folks who live out west (well, west of the Fox River). :)

That race is going to suck. It should be fun.

Wilke, you coming down? I've got a thing or two for you but I've had some problems in the transfers...

psimet - "Am I dead? I see a light? Is this what it is supposed to feel like?"

i really want to go, but i can't really justify driving 4.5 hrs, racing 30 mins, then driving 4.5hrs back by myself.

btw- there were chicup people (from champaign) in ann arbor this weekend & they were a blast.

You guys are too clean, HTFU next time. No mud, blood or snot dripping from your noses = *******!

After my race my wife asked me why I was out of breath and why I don't clean my nose while riding.

The Chargrin Falls Cross Race in Ohio on Saturday had mud, pain, chili and beer!:D There even were costumed riders, I'm still left with the image of a Blonde Dallas Cowboy Cheerleader in a two piece outfit jumping over the hurdles.

meh...the bikes were dirty. I was too fast for the mud to stick to me.

As for breathing....that picture was taken after I had remembered who I was, after the low sugar trembling had slowed down, but while I was still pondering if I was still alive.

Yeah, I'll be there. Just look for the fat old man with the red backpack and a camera in each hand.

Word has it that the U.P. 'Cross Championships in Marquette were really good. From "Bikelikemad.org" (registration required, but it's free and immediate) ... "Think the most technical course we've ever had...okay now put the start and the finish on a bmx track, sprinkle in some honest to goodnest single track, some boulders, hub deep sand, two barricades at the apex of a 90 degree turn, a muck hole that was bottomless... "

Just got back from an all too short ride (it's 73 degrees!) and now it's time to finish my latest film - "Twin 'Cross".

It's killer.

Can anyone recommend a good pub/eatery for after the Northbrook race? Any Irish pubs nearby with a good menu? Guinness is excellent for bringing down the heart rate.
