Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

It was like Children of the Corn. So I'm a teacher, and I helped a student last night change the choke on his car ('74 Satellite). I biked over there on my Raleigh, wanting to show it to the kid's dad, since he's a bike guy. As I was getting ready to leave (in jeans and a T shirt), the little sister walks out and says "how can you ride that in jeans?"
Umm...what else would you ride it in?
Spandex...
I'm not going to change into spandex just to ride 3 miles to someone's house.
weird.

That's kinda funny. Also kinda sad that the girl had no clue that bikes might be used for more than hardcore (spandex wearing) training. Bike=transportation? Who knew??

But just think had you been in Spandex, the kid could have told all her friends about the super hero that visited her house last night!

Yeah...
after she said that though, I said "real easy, check this out:"
and I rolled up my right pants leg.

As my daddy once said, ". . .all depends on how ya' was raised". Case in point, I used to go to my friends' houses and was amazed they didn't have ready shotguns in the corner and a thumb-buster in the glove box; not to mention a couple of other surprises for those seeking discord. Equally alarming, they didn't genuflect, kneel, or cross themselves in church. Nor ate fish of a Friday! How absolutely weird.
Cycling Content: I biked to my friends' houses in torn denims and "sneaks" and had a perpetual red ooze where seam-met-crotch.

'Point bein' that kids reflecting their specific life's experiences are not by that limitation "Children of the Freakin' Corn".

I think the reason I posted it like this was that she was literally shocked that I wasn't wearing a full race getup on a 30 year old Raleigh to go on a 5 minute ride. Heck, I was still wearing my button-down shirt.
I don't know about you guys, but my first bike was a Rallye BMX that I beat the crap out of. Summer, winter, every minute of every day. I didn't even own a video game system and watched TV probably once or twice a week, simply because I was either playing soccer or biking around, exploring. And did I wear spandex? Nope. Always was I in jeans, shorts, etc. and tennis shoes.
Just boggles the mind that this kid is growing up in a biking family and is missing out on the quintissential biker-kid experiences...

Or, if coming from a cycling family, she has been training in spandex since she was three years old and can smoke riders twice her age. :p

Please forgive a BF50+ escapee his grumpy moment.

Real cyclists use Lycra, as spandex doesn't support your quads and isn't nearly as durable.

In your opinion. And in that family, your opinion probably doesn't count for much. Maybe that's why you see fit to ensure she and her family are ridiculed by you and your cronies on an internet forum like this.

Ridicule? No. I realize that 99% of the people on this board wear biking outfits, and I do myself. I just found it odd that a person didn't realize that it was possible to ride a bike without spending 10 minutes to "suit up" first.
Perhaps you shouldn't be so quick to judge someone who found something a strange experience.
And hey, if she's been in lycra and spandex since she was a year old, fine. But she's never seen any of her friends or neighbors riding around on their Wal-Mart bikes wearing jeans and a Tshirt? I find that a bit hard to believe.
And I love your title - "has opinion, will express." You know what they say about opinions...

I think diapers under spandex would look pretty stupid, but to each his own…
I remember cracking a hickory nut with a rock and eating it in front of our cousins from the city when we was kids. I thought one of them was going to hurl! :D
Before it was over all three of them had tried it.
Then I talked one of them into biting a green persimmon, they never believed a word I ever said again, unto this day.:o

It takes you 10 minutes???

Total. Find the outfit, take off my street clothes, put on the other clothes, lace up my shoes, then reverse the process. In all, a big PITA that, in this case, would just help me to get a sexy grease mark across the front of my jersey.

That's a funny story. How old was she?
My first thought is that it probably isn't about "you can't bike without spandex", it's probably about "you can't bike on the curly handlebar bikes (road bikes) without spandex".
Had you happened to be riding a straight bar bike, that might be something she was used to seeing people in "normal" clothes riding.
