So.. since my insurance is finally paying some of my damages from the flood and I've repaired most of the damage on my own the last 6 weeks and put in my own blood and sweat and had some help of my colleagues, my dad, my wife/kids; most of the monies from the insurance will stay in my bank account.

Now here comes the question:

Should I ask my wife if I could use some of that insurance money to buy myself a new bicycle? I reaaaaaally would love to get my hands on a CAAD9 frame and turn it into a fixed gear/single speed.

What do you guys think? :D

BTW.. it is quite a substantial amount, and 2k missing from the insurance money would be not even 5%.

Can you put up an option that is something like "Yes to the CAAD 9, but not as a single speed"?

Haha.. that would dilute the poll. The problem is, I don't know what I want more.
A single speed, a power tap, a CAAD9 race bike or a cross bike for commuting and cross racing.
ARGH!

You don't get what you don't ask for. I say yah, heck I would ask for a new bike and a new set of wheels for my other bike. If she says no it will make just the new bike an easier sell. Who knows you might end up with both.:D

Hmmm....my $0.02 in order (with reasoning):

cross bike for commuting and cross racing (you love commuting and your commuter was stonlen. Not to mention cross is fun and all out racing)
a power tap (you like to race and have spent a lot of time doing it. Make your training more effective for the time you have)
a CAAD9 race bike (I think a CAAD9 would make an ultimate crit bike)
A single speed (fun....but that's it. A nice diversion, but if you still plan on racing I'd put it as a last place luxury)

My Trek ain't to shabby for crits, so the CAAD9 would be my 2nd racer. I think I need to opt for a cross bike.. but I don't think I would commute on it, even tho I would love too. Just because I'm afraid it would get stolen again :(

Mppf... decisions decisions... maybe I should just sock the money away and buy some stocks, like.. hmm... GM or Ford :roflmao2:

I just pulled the trigger yesterday on a Jamis Sputnik singlespeed/fixed gear, after spending a couple convincing myself why I "needed" one. Then figuring out to pay for at least part of it by selling a couple older bikes I don't really ride anymore (Psimet, I got $195 for that Specialized Rock Combo, I'm shipping it to Portland this afternoon) and asking my wife:love: and kids about the difference as an early birthday present (Feb.:innocent:). I say GO FOR IT!!!:thumb:

Nice job on the specialized. You should have kept it and raced a cross race or 2 for poops and grins.

I never give advice on women, but here goes. I want to buy a new bike. So I asked my wife a series of questions. I learned in a sales course to try to get 2 no then go for the yes on #3.

1. Honey, can I buy a new motorcycle? I have always wanted a harley and $25k will do it OK?
No, she said.

2. Hon, we hired a new hot little 20 something secretary at work, she has been kinda hitting on me. Can I take her to Florida for the weekend?
No, she said among other things.

3. Could I spend a few thousand on a bicycle?
She said no, I was gonna need the money for an attorney. What do you think that means?

Anyway that is why I dont give advice on women.

NO. Less asking, more buying and hiding.

LOL.. I guess the advice here is from:
Grow some balls already to Asking for forgiveness is better than asking for permission over Your divorce lawyer is going to be expensive!

Actually I did ask her and she thought it was a good idea that I get a cross bike, since I only have a road racing bike so far. After all the time i've been busting my butt in the basement she thought I could have something nice. This is going in a good direction :)

I say check your home owners policy. I know that if my bike (s) are stolen, they are covered. Sure, you might have to pay the deductable (500??), but still cheaper than forkin out the whole thing. I'm sure you filed a police report, that should be all you need.

Yes, but she gets to buy something from the money also. This always works with my wife.

Still fighting with the bank to get my insurance money. It seems checks over 15k are being deposited into an escrow and being held there until you can show receipts.

So now I gotta get all the receipts together, which of course is not matching with the expected numbers the bank wants. Let's see how they like it after I tell them I put 400 hours of my own life into my basement and that I'm asking for 70$/hour.
