Road Cycling - Trek Prices

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

How much would be a fair price to pay for the Trek 2200 in the New York area? Is it worth the extra money for the 2300 since the frame is the same?

I was going to shop prices on the Trek 5500 and 5900 and have learned that there is almost no price competition on Trek, they ask dealers to stay at suggested selling price. I've heard the only way to get a Trek deal is end of season, and even then they are not steals. Trek does not allow online sales so that keeps LBS prices up and stable. Simple economics, high demand+limited supply=high prices.

I got my 5200 at about $300 under msrp.
LBS puts Treks on special several times a yr, usually only a couple of bikes, but
20% reductions are not unusual. They will sometimes deal on a comparable if
they don't have the size of color you want but are less flexible on price then.
If they are not on sale, then sticker is what you get. Cannondale and Litespeed
are similar with Litespeed going way up since they stopped selling frames (for the most part) and began painting the frames adding about $200 to the frame price
over the brushed Ti. Steve
look elsewhere.
What does this mean? I think it is the most useless reply I have ever read.
Lennyparis, how much do they want for the 2200.
you'll find better deals on other bikes.

I can't directly answer your question on price, but I ride an '01 2200 and have zero complaints. It continues to be everything I need and way more, and the '04s are even better with carbon fiber tails and several ultegra components. You can spend less money and get less bike. You have to spend a lot more money to make a noticable difference. The 2200 is the sweet spot of a fine line of machines.
Its a great bike and a good price. Don't listen to members that don't even ride. My riding partner has one and loves it. It has great components, great USA made frame and a lifetime warranty.
Hey MERTON, do you even have a bike?
It looks like the only real difference between the 2200 and 2300 is in the front derailleur (105 vs. Ultegra), rims (Race vs. Race Lite) and brakes (105 vs Ultegra). Personally speaking, I don't think I'd notice much of a difference where the 105 is in place of Ultegra. The 2200 is going to be slightly heavier. The question then becomes one of the wheels. I don't know how much lighter or nicer riding the Race Lite is vs. the Race but I suspect it's probably not a $350 difference but then again I can't really say. I'd personally spring for the 2200 and if I really wanted remarkably better wheels (which is not to say that the Race are bad or anything) then I would just stash the difference away to save for something of a quantum performance increase.

Anyone got the skinny on the next Trek sale, definetley the LBS I go to seem to be hush about such things. 5200 sale would be great, they did say that for next model year the 5200 ultegra will have the 10 speed. So I would imagine a good sale on the 2004 5200 9's.
Based on my LBS there is no set time for a "Trek sale" End of model yr is a moving
concept that probably occurs "sometime" after Xmas. LBS has spring sale that occurred 1-2wks ago, a late summer and then again in late Oct or early Nov preparatory to xmas. Prices of 10-15% off list or usual LBS prices occur at these
times on essentially all bikes in the store and they have occasional flyers for 20+
% off such as a 5500 for $2200 or a Lemond Ti for $2100. Usually these are one
of a kind. Our shop sends out postcards and notices to the bikeclub that now
has an email newsletter and verbose president so if you are in contact you hear
about these but if you are off the mailing list you may miss some of these. Steve

Man if I could get a 5500 for $2200 I would fly to Birmingham to pick it up. Methinks perhaps you meant the 5200.

No...the question was about specific Treks. Like Madone's. That's a different animal, entirely. Nobody said Treks never went on sale. We had 5200's on sale last weekend along with the Treks below that bike. 5900s and Madones are not the same.
no. i don't have a road bike yet. i'm waiting till i have the money and my legs are worthy, but compare.

roadwarior, how much were you selling 5200's when they were on sale, just curious. Thanks
$2200. That's the price at a dealer in Raliegh, NC last week. Not sure if they are still at this price though. There are several Trek dealers here and, almost always one is having some kind of general sale and the 5200 usually is between 22 and 2300. This is one advantage of a larger town. Of course once you add the 6 or 7% tax then you are back up to what others charge.
I would not hold out for a $100 or $200 drop though, especially on a good bike like the 5200. The attention and on-going support you will get from your local dealer as well as getting your bike right away is worth a couple hundred (in my opinion, anyway).

Well, my LBS recently told me that they don't mark theirs down until end of season inventory clearance, and that's of course take what you get in terms of models/sizes. I live in Fairfax, VA--anyone around here have a different Trek buying experience in the DC area? Which dealers sell at the best price?

Yep. You're wrong about value. You're comparing two aluminum bikes (one is a triathlon bike for goshsakes) to a carbon fiber/aluminum hybrid bike. The Trek is also a triple and the KHS tri bike is a double. Here's a better comparison to the KHS bikes:

Also, the campy Mirage/Xenon group is =very= entry level.

$2275...and I sold three of them. One of which had to be ordered as we ran out of 60's.
