Foo - Trans-Siberian Orchestra

Here it is, the 5th of November, and I am getting ready to leave work, go home and eat dinner and then go enjoy an evening of Christmas music by TSO... They are in the midst of their afternoon show as I type.

I just wish they were in town a little closer to Christmas, but I am pumped to go see them.

This will be the third time I will see them, and will be average seats for me. The first time was in the first row, then about 20 rows back, and now I will be in the 7th row.

I love the show, but I really do wish it was closer to Christmas...

Is anyone else a fan and/or planning to see them this year?

I hope they complete their next album and do a non-Christmas tour soon... I always hoped for a tour connected to Beethoven's Last Night... Maybe after Night Castle is released. ;)

+1 (Music degree here.) They are stupid pop music drivel. It makes me sad that people think
they are having a cultural experience by going to their show.

I will reluctantly admit, however: Symphonies couldn't stay in business without their pops series concerts.

I'm something of a music snob, and I've heard better (The Polyphonic Spree comes to mind), but they do a great job making Christmas music sound good...

I love music. Except for praise/gospel. But that's another story. TSO is awesome. I don't care if they are pop driven. They have a sound that is not like any other.

They're a refreshing breeze after enduring the same boring holiday music for decades. Why did they change their name anyway?

I will be going to see them on Saturday, for about the fifth or sixth time, I forget exactly. In the venue of groups playing classic-influenced Christmas music, I will take TSO over Mannheim Steamroller any day.

I don't think anyone goes to TSO for a cultural experience -- just entertainment and a good time, which it certainly is.

Playing at the Kirby?

Going to see them on the 14th of December. Bringing the wife and kids. Not going for a "cultural experience" just going to hang out with the kids and have fun.

My sons are 10 and 14 and I try to get them to every concert I go to.

They played at the Wachovia Arena. I think Kirby Center would be too small too accommodate the scale of their show.

It took me about 45 minutes to drive the last 1/2 mile, as I think the 4:00 show let out about 1 hour before the start of the 8:00 show, so getting the lot cleared probably delayed the traffic getting in for the second show. I finally got into the arena about 15 minutes after the show was scheduled to start, and got to my seat (which was great) as the show started.

It was my 3rd time seeing their show (this is their 10th year) and each show has been a little different. I enjoyed myself again.

I agree that it is not the same as a classical concert, and a little watered down for a rock show, but frankly, it is right in my zone for what I like, so I loved it. I can enjoy both classical music, and a hard rock show, but for my money, TSO is pure entertainment.

The lighting was a little overpowering a couple of times from my seat, but I was close enough that I could have been blinded with a couple of powerful flashlights...

As usual, the first half was the Christmas show/presentation with the narration etc, followed by a more free form concert to fill the time including a few more Christmas pieces mixed with some pieces from Beethoven's Last Night and the upcoming Night Castle.

During the second half, Paul O'Neil came on and he announced that Night Castle will be released in the summer (there were only vague mentions of an upcoming release when I last saw TSO 2 or 3 years ago) but he also said that barring any technical glitches there will be downloads available on Amazon on Thanksgiving. He however didn't say anything about a tour connected with the album. I would like to see a non-Christmas TSO tour. Paul also played with the band during the second half of the show.

I can understand that TSO is not everyone's cup of tea. But, I can also understand how they cross the line, and can be enjoyed by old and young, merging jazz, rock, classical, instrumental and vocal in a way that got people from 8 to 80 on their feet last night...

It may be drivel, but it got people excited and smiling, and it is still a long time until Christmas.

Oh hells yeah!

I really like them (music major checking in). Most of the Christmas music makes me so depressed that I want to jump out of a window - this is supposed to be happy music and so much of it just is depressing with stars past their prime trying to make artsy ballads. Make it happy, make it powerful, don't make it cliched - I'm in. I have a few eclectic albums I enjoy starting in a few weeks (too early!!).

Another album I love for Christmas is Garth Brooks... A big band sound, that is very up beat.

I enjoy Christmas music in general, but it definitely has to be the upbeat festive Christmas music.

I am agnostic, so I am not into it for the religious theme, but for the whole joy and happiness, I am there!

If someone starts in with O Little Town of Bethlehem or other slow songs, I tend to want to avoid Christmas music... but then again, I love to hear Nat King Cole singing the Christmas Song, I just have to stop and listen as soon as I hear him croon, "Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire..." I guess a little romance is okay too. ;)

And as far as too early, one of the local oldies stations has already started playing nothing but Christmas music... I don't start listening to any Christmas music on my own until after Thanksgiving.

Why does music always have to pass cultural muster?
