more of a mind puzzle instead of a joke: (and yes, i do know how to explain it; i'm just passing around for fun:)).

three friends are in a restaurant. they have their meal and are about to pay for it. the waiter comes by with the bill. the bill comes out to 15$. the three friends each throw in 5$, and the waiter takes the money to the cashier guy.

the cashier guy says to the waiter "you fool, you were only meant to charge them 10$! go return 5$!"

so off the waiter goes, back to the people. however, the friends don't know that they are owed 5$, and the waiter knows this. the waiter decides to pocket 2$, and only give 3$ back to the friends; they wouldn't know, right?

so the waiter returns 1$ to each friend, and keeps 2$ for himself. if each friend gets 1$ back, that means they each only paid 4$. the waiter kept 2$. 3(4) + 2 = 14$. but in total they paid 15$!

where did the missing dollar go?

There is no missing dollar.

It's all about how you present this to whoever is reading it. The 3(4) + $2 = $14 line is misleading, because the 2 dollars that was kept by the waiter is actually part of the 3(4).

$10 bill + $2 the waiter kept = $12 = 3 x $4

This the same math the government is using to bail out Wall Street. I'll leave it to you to guess who has the missing funds.
