I have an old BCD 110 shimano cranks, what is the biggest chainring that I can have for this before I go to the BCD 130? 52-53?

I have seen 52T rings for 110mm BCD. Keep watching eBay and SheldonBrown.com if you want them or perhaps something even bigger. Structurally, a 110mm BCD should be able to support up to perhaps a 56T ring without excessive flex, but 130 or 135mm would, of course, be preferable in this application.

You can buy 110 bcd chainrings up to about 56 or so. The smallest that will fit is a 34.

I just saw an Ultegra 110/74 BCD crankset with a Dura-Ace 56-tooth big chainring on eBay. Woulda been a perfect way-big ring for my 'bent, but the bidding got a bit rich. Odd thing was, the "inside" diameter of the ring, between the bolts, was about the same as for a 52-ish ring, so there's a wide expanse of metal between the bolts and the outside of the ring. Big enough for the word "Dura-Ace" in huge letters. I woulda thought they'd design it more "flying buttress" style, to save weight.

I remember downhill mountain bikers running upwards of 60T on 110BCD cranks. I'm not sure if they were custom made though but I suspect they were off-the-shelf. Check out Vuelta (http://www.vueltausa.com/chainsizes.htm) for some large 110BCD rings.
